Words of Weissdom

Words+of+Weissdom

Being the wallflower that I am, I cannot help but notice the latest fad that is happening around me. Before “indie” became the definition of how a girl should dress, what music she should listen to and how “unique” her Tumblr should look, indie simply stood for the word “independent.” Being “independent” classified someone who strayed away from the norm and portrayed him or herself exactly as he or she wanted to be defined–no matter the popular trends.

In today’s society, I cannot help but feel that being indie has become more of a form of acceptance into the norm rather than a statement of self-expression. People who are indie typically do not participate in mainstream trends; however, being indie has become a mainstream trend itself, so does that mean being yourself is the new indie?

As cliché as it sounds, I believe that being yourself will create your own definition of “independent”. Whether you are one to follow the latest pop culture trends or one to discover aspiring folk-rock bands, everyone possesses some quality that makes him or her stand out from the rest.

I have to say that when it comes to this concept I got lucky. I have learned that the key to loving yourself and finding the qualities within you that really define who you are only prevail when surrounded by those who admire and cherish all your positive personality traits, but more importantly, your natural flaws. So before you drive 30 miles to reach your nearest flea market to purchase a pair of high-waisted sunflower shorts or spend two hours downloading music that was played at Coachella even though you don’t like it, remember who you really are. Your natural self is the best version of you that can never be replicated.

I am so proud of you. I have never seen someone so strong. You have inspired me to be optimistic in every situation and I look up to you more than I look up to any other person. I love you so much. She is with you every second. Your beautiful smile and genuine soul lives on- R.I.P. H.D.
