Whether one is an aspiring filmmaker searching for inspiration or a casual browser skimming the aisles in search of a Friday night flick, all customers will find their ideal motion picture at Vidiots. Located onMain StreetinSanta Monica, Vidiots is home to a diverse collection of films, ranging from wacky 1960s comedies and bone-curdling horror pictures to independent art classics.
Since its opening in 1985, Vidiots has remained a movie haven for tourists and locals alike. The store has gained its fame through legendary events such as video screenings, spoken words nights and sing-a-longs. Compared to commercial video stores such as Hollywood Video or Blockbuster, Vidiots offers an experience where one can chat with knowledgeable employees, connect with fellow admirers or stare in awe at the diverse selection of movies.
“Our inventory is really unlike any other, and our staff is very knowledgeable,” said co-owner of Vidiots Cathy Tauber. “[People] seem to gravitate toward different employees who know them. “There is sort of a social aspect to [Vidiots] because we are such a community-based business.”
As a service to indecisive locals, each month the Vidiots’ staff creates lists of video recommendations classified by topics. For instance, “Family Night” consists of cartoon movies to be shared with mom and dad, and “Doin’ Time” offers crime films.
A year and a half ago, the store added a 35 seat screening room known as the Secret Annex. The room holds private parties and workshops as a service to the community. One of their most attended events features Anime films.
“Being able to socialize with the employees helps me know what I am looking for,” said shopper Katherine Kaufman. “I like the wide selection of [unique] films which are [rare] in other video stores.”
Vidiots will leave an everlasting impression on any visitor regardless if one is selecting a film to augment one’s prized collection or simply marveling over the success of an independent video store. Vidiots guarantees that, despite personal preference, no movie lover will ever leave empty-handed. •
