Twist and turn with anti-gravity yoga

Twist and turn with anti-gravity yoga

AntiGravity Yoga is a new type of fitness that has all the Calabasas moms and teens hanging upside down with excitement.  Christopher Harrison, the inventor of Antigravity, promotes the activity to increase one’s overall health. Participants pose in beautiful positions such as “queen bee”, “vampire” and “candy cane” that perfectly align the body to reach pure serenity.

The AntiGravity hammock, which can hold up to 2,000 pounds, is so relaxing that you will never want to leave it hanging.  The use of the hammock in yoga is also known to relieve joint pains through a unique fusion of dance, aerial and Pilates.  Originally intended for gymnasts and intense athletes to soothe and take away their pain from overexerting themselves, the strenuous exercise of AntiGravity Yoga is now available to the common athlete or yoga fanatic.  Each AntiGravity Yoga teacher instructs his or her class according to his or her specialty.  A yoga teacher might teach with more relaxation and meditation and less cardio while a Pilate’s instructor might teach with more vigorous activity and not as many calming breathing techniques.

There are more types of Anitgravity classes than just aerial yoga, including Antigravity restorative and kids’ yoga.  Antigravity restorative yoga is focused more on healing and making the body feel good.  This form of yoga is much more gentle and is especially known for treating spinal issues with many joint-soothing poses.  Kids’ yoga is aimed toward the yoga lovers under 10 years old.  In the class, parents assist their children in performing simple core strengthening positions and light inversions.

AntiGravity Yoga has become very popular in Calabasas since the opening of Coolhotyoga, the chic yoga company that originated in Cresskill, New Jersey.  This company is also the proud owner to one of the only three yoga studios in all of California to offer AntiGravity fitness classes.  Coolhotyoga offers more than 30 diverse classes per week for all levels of ability and many age groups.  The Calabasas branch provides adult classes, 13 years-and-older classes and level 2 classes.  CHS alumni Lexi Wyshak is currently teaching Kid’s Hip Hop on Wednesday evenings from 5:15 until 6:00 p.m., which includes an upbeat warm-up and strenuous  hip hop sequences.  The class is for beginning and intermediate level dancers of all ages.

Not only is AntiGravity Yoga used for excercise, but it is also used for entertainment purposes.  For example, Pink used this style of yoga in her performance at the American Music Awards this last year.  The famous singer utilized her flexibility and AntiGravity Yoga techniques to choreograph an original pose, the chandelier, in which she contorts her body into the perfect upside-down position.

AntiGravity yoga is the perfect balance of fitness and fun for everyone.  The class is fantastic for realigning your body and achieving a state of complete relaxation.  Good for the mind, body and soul, Antigravity fitness is a great way to healthily start or end any day.
