The store sells humorous items that are similar to those found in Urban Outfitters. The collector’s abode is extremely kooky and features many different objects within a wide selection of categories ranging from home décor to taxidermy. For those with artistic interests, the shop is also home to an art gallery in which new art is installed daily by a myriad of artists. The store hosts many events for all types of art and even the occasional book signing.
In 1971, the store opened as Soap Plant, a family-run shop for which the mother created hand soaps, the father designed the graphics and the couple’s children, Peter and Billy Shire, produced leatherware. Billy’s leather outfits attracted famous clients including Elton John, and by the early 1980s the store became Billy’s, so he added new items including books and jewelry. The store relocated and became Wacko Soap Plant.
This zany shop is appealing to teenagers because of the odd yet fascinating items it sells at unbelievably low prices. Some of the unique car accessories available include a Buddha car charger to calm your road rage with a zen feeling, a macaroni and cheese air freshener if you are feeling cheesy and a Bigfoot air freshener which will fulfill your fictitious animal needs. Other interesting tchotchkes you may discover at this emporium are cult movie paraphernalia and even books on Nirvana. If looking to remodel your room, Wacko Soap Plant has everything you need. From Origami crane lamps to food-based pillows, your room will look breathtaking and be an attest to your unique style. To feel like a kid again, play dress up with the store’s comical assorted frog masks. Throw in Giant Lobster claws to complete your underwater-themed outfit.
Inside Wacko Soap Plant expect to see bright neon colors and multiple endless rows stocked full of merchandise. When looking above the rows lining the walls, beautiful paintings, art pieces and random trinkets such as pop-out monkey stickers will be sure to catch your eye. While driving past the store look for the words “SOAP PLANT WACKO JESUS” that visibly decorate the side of the kooky place in black and white, and at night, search for “WACKO” that can be seen in bright lights.
