Meet Junior designer Sophia Solomonson

With magazines and sketches scattered on the desk before her, junior Sophia Solomonson submerges herself into the world of fashion. Using her eye for intricate detail, Solomonson prepares to create sublime and stylish clothes for women of all shapes and sizes.

Possessing a natural interest, Solomonson first decided to expand her fashion knowledge by taking beginner design courses that included crochet, knitting and basic sewing. Her mom, a former designer for national department stores, pushed Solomonson to take these classes very seriously and urged her to pursue her creative goals. Solomonson was not only able to expand her skills, but she was also able to acknowledge her true talent as an artist.

sophia“[My parents] have been there through all aspects of my life, especially when it comes to design,” said Solomonson. “They push me to do my best and have taught me so much. [I would] be lost [without] their guidance.”

To gain experience, Solomonson spent two weeks at Parsons School of Design in New York, where she learned to widen her bohemian chic personal style and flourish as a designer. This prestigious design school teaches students directly through art and architecture, rather than through other people.

“At Parsons, I learned the importance of finding beauty through unconventionality,” said Solomonson. “It changed my perspective of beauty as well as my [outlook] on design.”

Iconic designers such as Alexander McQueen and Balenciaga also inspire Solomonson with unique and innovative clothing.

“[McQueen and Balenciaga’s] clothing is art [that is] meant to be worn,” Solomonson said. “They inspire me because they stay true to their own image.” Through each article of clothing that she creates, Solomonson reveals something that words cannot express and finds beauty in simplicity.
