Sophomore Cory Erving prepares to take the music industry by storm

Inspired by J Dilla, an innovative American record producer from the 90s, sophomore Cory Erving plans to lead a successful career in the music industry. Both Erving’s love for music and his desire to create a name for himself motivate him to pursue a music career and follow in the footsteps of his father, who is currently the co-president for the R&B music company, Atom Factory.

“My dad has such a great work ethic, and he was able to become successful without anyone’s help,” said Erving.  “He made it on his own in the music industry which is one of the toughest industries to succeed in.”

Erving respects and admires his father’s dedication and is willing to make the same sacrifices necessary in achieving his dreams of writing and producing his own music. Erving describes his commitment to music similar to that of playing a sport. Just like an athlete, Erving dedicates all of his time on music , hoping to expand his horizons as far out as possible.

“I do not limit myself to a specific type of music or genre,” said Erving. “All of my music is different, nothing sounds the same.”

Erving began his music career when he learned to play the drums at the age of nine and wrote his own song by the time he had turned 12. Currently, he is collaborating with several artists and is working to create a unique sound, which he plans to further develop when he attains his goal of attending Berklee School of Music in Boston, Mass. As the largest independent college of contemporary music in the world, with alumni including John Mayer, Quincy Jones and Brad Whitford, Erving understands that accompishing this will requre dedication and perseverance regardless of what other people think of his work, and challenges others to do the same.

“Do not take criticism too harshly,” said Erving.  “Instead of taking it negatively, use it to do better and make better music.”

Erving will continue to practice and produce until his dream of being known throughout the music industry becomes a reality.
