The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society-although oddly named-is a charming story of unlikely friendships and resourcefulness during times of hardship told through the captivating letters exchanged among friends in post World War Europe. After a young and energetic London writer is contacted by the literature-hungry residents of Guernsey, she learns the stories of all of the members of the Literary and Potato Peel Society, who banded together to smuggle resources past the brutal German soldiers during the German occupation, all while finding creative ways to entertain themselves. The individual stories, while intertwined, are quirky and as different as can be. Each member has an extremely different personality and point of view, creating a well-rounded and colorful cast of characters to captivate all audiences. With each letter, the reader learns a lesson in love, friendship, heartbreak and action, exemplified through the thoughts and experiences of the characters.

In her debut novel In Between, Sarah V. Brown tells a touching story of love that is sure to provoke tears and laughter alike. The story begins with the introduction of Abigail, a small town seventeen year old girl, who is struggling to learn to trust after the heartbreak of learning the devastating truth that her father abandoned her and her family years before. Abigail’s life takes an unexpected turn for the better when she meets Hunter, a teenage boy desperate to find himself and forget his past. Despite her initially hard exterior, Abigail is really just looking for someone to love and accept her for who she truly is, and Hunter is perfect for the job. He disregards her refusals, seeing her true feelings and realizing she is just scared of being hurt again. While their love story is the central focus of the novel, Abigail’s personal growth is just as important as she strives to pursue her dream of acting and searches to find the truth about her father. No matter your age or gender, everyone should read the emotional tale. You can purchase “In Between” HERE
With overwhelming popularity shown through Facebook statuses, phone cases and even t-shirts, YOLO is the way to GO(LO).

Evident by the decline in spinning rims and low riders, Swag has become more of a drag. Dougie-ing is no longer the hottest dance move, and sagging pants is last year’s fashion blunder. So be sure to wear suspenders and paint your grills white!

Whether one wants to see the world through the lens of a vintage camera or a professional, digital camera, Instagram has it all. The new app available for iPhone and Andorid is a must have for camera-geeks who want to share and edit an endless amount of photos.

Photobooth has officially lost its picture perfect silhouette. Do not be caught dead snapping pictures in public with Photobooth, for it takes up more memory in one’s computer than it does in the “Picture with the Most Likes on Facebook” Hall of Fame.

The Dailey Method, which is located walking distance from CHS, specializes in a one-hour workout routine that targets every aspect of the body. The routine includes ballet barre work, core conditioning, muscle strengthening, yoga and orthopedic exercises.

The studio implements the Lotte Berke method, which is based on the concept of using one’s own body
weight to isolate specific muscle groups. This practice works on flexibility, injury prevention and strengthening by combining elements of yoga, pilates and stretching. Each class targets different parts of the body by slightly changing up the workout each time.

Instead of the typical sit-ups and crunches routine, instructors at the Dailey Method provide exercises that focus on the “neutral position.” This alignment of the spine creates a healthy balance that promotes confidence during and after a workout. When the neutral position is achieved, this balance transfers over to one’s personal life creating an increased awareness of daily movement.

Clients of all ages from 14-75 attend classes at the Dailey Method where they receive individualized attention in order to meet their goals. Regardless of one’s fitness goals, anyone can enjoy this routine and leave the center with a balance of the body and mind.

Krav Maga, the official defense system of the Israeli Armed forces, has captured the attention of thousands of Americans who wish to get in shape and learn one of the most effective forms of self-defense. Krav Maga emphasizes instinct movements, practical techniques and realistic training scenarios that can be successfully applied in the real world.

This hand-to-hand combat system is different from traditional martial arts. The art form does not rely on size or strength; therefore, it is practical for any gender or age group to implement if faced with a dangerous situation. The Krav Maga Worldwide studio in Sherman Oaks teaches participants what to do in times of stress or surprise attacks.

In addition, Krav Maga Worldwide also offers conditioning programs and specialized fitness classes that cannot be found anywhere else. The programs are based on the idea of “fitness meets fighting” where heavy bags, kettle bells and ropes are just a few of the tools used in the workouts that focus on strength dynamics and flexibility. Students will increase muscular strength and endurance through proper technique, repetition and drills.

Krav Maga is a two for one deal. The Krav Maga Worldwide logo states, “Get in shape. Go home safe.

SPN Pilates is a exercise center in Calabasas that features a variety of classes to keep their clients fit. Classes include pilates, spin, and pilates/spin fusion. Each class takes place in a personalized setting to create an energized and motivating environment for the participants. The dark lighting and loud music also add to the ambiance of a powerful workout. The limited number of participants in the class also helps to provide a close bond, allowing a satisfying level of comfort.

The studio also has an on-staff nutritionist to help members fuel their body in a healthy way. The studio believes that providing one’s body with healthy food for energy is equally important as exercising. With the help of the studio’s team of experienced instructors, not only do clients burn 600 calories, but they leave with the knowledge of how to lead a healthy life as well.

In an attempt to be eco-friendly, the state-of-the-art studio was built with sustainable and energy-efficient materials. Additionally, the studio uses natural cleaning products that are both hypoallergenic and plant-based tokeep the studio fresh and clean.

SPN Pilates emphasizes a healthy lifestyle through their exciting classes, helpful nutrition tips, and clean environment.

There is no denying the love all teens subconsciously hold for Plumpy, Gramma Nut, Princess Lolly as well as the other animated board game characters from childhood years. Let the inner kid rejoice, for Candy Land truly does exist in the form of Sweet XO.

Located in Agoura Hills, the interior of Sweet XO appeals to all the senses. The local candy shop is decorated with brightly colored wallpaper and candy-filled shelves able to turn even the most cynical editor into a happy-go-lucky child. The aroma of brownies and homemade cupcakes is enough to augment any consumer’s calorie count.

Sweet XO not only offers internal satisfaction, but an external joy found amidst the diverse array of retail items that range from the ever-classy Jonathan Adler stationary to Trina Turk pillows. One can even purchase sleepwear from Mudpie, the perfect attire for that casual night when craving Sweet XO’s goody-bag delights.

Do not be fooled by the slightly feminine décor and girly language of this review, as Sweet XO is fully equipped with men’s clothing and delectable ensembles for the masculine preference. The Man Cave, located in this candy wonderland, sells a wide array items from graphic tees to manly scented candles (not a paradox).

At the special toppings bar, Sweet XO serves a variety of treats to complement any flavor of frozen yogurt. Consumers can select delicious brownies or cookies to top off their individualized creations. And to pair with all those sweets, they can enjoy the soda fountain, along with a tea and coffee bar. Cherry coke floats, fruit tisane, herbal, earl grey, white, black, rooibos, oolong and decaf are all just one order away.

Furthermore, the editors can imagine they are not the only ones who thrilled by Sweet XO’s free wifi coupled with their afternoon indulgences.

Take a ride on the sweet side and check out this one-of-a-kind candy shop.

The event will feature performances from the CHS music program’s co-ed a cappella group, Unstrumental as well as its all-girl group, Bare Rhythm. Additionally, the program will welcome collegiate a cappella groups such as University of California, Santa Barbara’s Naked Voices and University of California, Los Angeles’s groups: Signature, Scattertones and Awaken.

“[A Cappella Night is] probably the most energetic concert of the year,” said music director Joshua Barroll. “There are so many great groups and it’s always very fun for both the performers and the audience.”

This year, Unstrumental received praise for its performances at the Los Angeles A Cappella Festival on Jan. 27 and 28 at UCLA. At LAAF, the group received awards for Fan Favorite, Best Female Soloist, Best Staging and Best Arrangement. They were awarded the opportunity to work with the Sing-Off champion and a cappella group, Pentatonix. -Lida Dianti – Features Editor

Wright Middle School. The event celebrates those who have battled cancer, lost loved ones to the disease and the caregivers who give their time to the sick. There are over 40 teams participating this year and each team sets up a booth that raises money for the cause.

“This will be my 7th year participating in Relay for Life,” said co-chair of entertainment senior Taylor Boucher. “It is a great way to have fun while honoring family members, raising money for cancer research and spreading awareness.”

This year Calabasas Relay for Life is projected to raise more than $120,000. The money raised will go towards cancer research, resources that transport cancer patients to hospitals and a phone line where those affected by cancer can talk to someone. It is possible to join a team up until the day of the event. -Melissa Fenchel – News Editor

The 2nd annual Senior Solo Night will take place on May 17 at 7 p.m. in the theater. At the event, seniors who have been in the music program for four years are given the opportunity to perform their talents.

“Being a part of the music program throughout my entire high school experience has shaped me into the person I am today,” said senior Stephanie Marks. “My musical abilities have grown so much and I cannot wait to showcase all that I have learned.”

15 to 20 seniors will perform at Senior Solo Night, and the remaining 10 to 15 will perform during the finale concerts throughout the remainder of this year. Music directors Joshua Barroll and Aaron Kohen require each senior to pass a performance exam before they are able to participate in the event.

“Senior solos are one of the ways we reward students who have dedicated a huge portion of their time to the music program,” said Barroll.

The performances allow students to emit their own personal style, as well as reflect upon their individuality and technique as a musician. -Rachel Stewart – Staff Writer

On Friday May 25, CHS will hold their 8th Annual Student Film Festival in the theater at 7 p.m. The Festival will honor both the creativity and hard work of young filmmakers, as well as give back to the global community. All of the ticket and bake sale proceeds will go to the Somalian Relief Fund.

All students whether enrolled in a film or broadcasting class or not are given the opportunity to submit a film. Awards are handed out the night of the Festival for the following categories: Best Editing, Screenplay, Actor, Actress, Director, Music Video, Film-Comedy and Film Drama.

“Our festival is like a mini Oscar show with persuaders, secret envelopes, Golden Awards Girls, acceptance speeches and mini Oscar-like trophies,” said CHS film teacher Margie Selke.

As the audience enters, trailers of the films submitted will be shown, and the awards will take place shortly afterward. After each winner is announced, he or she has the opportunity to make an acceptance speech. Finally, all the winning films will be shown, with a shout out to those who won. -Pegah Natanzi – Staff Writer

In today’s technologically advanced world, senior photographer Morey Spellman illustrates how a photograph can be worth a thousand words. In an era when people skim through pictures on Facebook as quickly as they send text messages, Spellman urges those around him to slow down for a moment and appreciate life, beauty and art.

“I really love trying to tell a story or provoke an emotion through my pictures,” said Spellman. “It is really difficult to get someone to be moved from just a single frame, and it is something I strive to accomplish on a daily basis.”

Spellman has always been interested in the artistic aspect of pictures. When he was younger, he often found delight in spending time with his grandfather, a professional photographer, and looking through his many photos.

Spellman never assumed he would pursue a career in photography, but his fascination with the art soon developed into a passion.

“I like my work to convey that life should be appreciated,” said Spellman. “I believe people should appreciate beauty and utilize every minute that they have in this world. That has always been my general motivation not only in photography but also for life in general.”

Much of his inspiration comes from Jerry Uelsmann, a famous photographer from the 1960s who produced abstract images during a time when Photoshop did not exist. Spellman appreciates Uelsmann’s extraordinary skill and ability to transform regular photos into surreal masterpieces.

After taking his camera with him to capture shots of some local band performances, Spellman’s quiet hobby caught recognition. Before he knew it, friends and strangers alike were so impressed with Spellman’s photos that they began requesting his services. He acquiesced and soon found that taking pictures of people was something he really loved to do. Although he enjoys photographing a variety of scenes and objects, Spellman’s main joy is to include actual people in his frames.

“I feel that a picture of a landscape may be beautiful, but putting a person in the frame awakens the scene [and brings it] to life,” said Spellman. “A person’s emotions add vitality and convey a much greater story to the audience at hand.”

Spellman hopes to tell a story through his photographs. While there are many photographers who strive for a natural and pure feel to their photos, he prefers to diverge from the norm while creating edgier and more surreal art.

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina destroyed communities and thousands of lives throughout New Orleans. While most tuned in to NBC News to hear about the destruction caused by the storm, junior Erica Lang traveled to the ruins, worked to repair the city and helped mend the hearts of those who lost loved ones. Looking back five years later, Lang realizes that her trip to New Orleans is what pushed her to establish her own organization, Students for International Development and Aid, which motivates high school and college students to volunteer around the world.

After participating in a Hurricane Katrina cleanup project, Lang was able to help rebuild a school in Karatu, Tanzania that had been demolished in an earthquake. During the summer of 2011, Lang traveled to two cities in India, Tashi Jong and McLeod Ganj, where she taught English to Tibetan refugees. Her trips not only showed her how imporant it is to serve the less fortunate, but they also made her more appreciative of her own life.

“It is great for students to personally see what people face around the globe on a daily basis, and how students can make a change in the world,” said Lang.

SIDA is currently collaborating with the director of Volunteers For International Development Aid, David Levine. The organizations are partnering up and putting together international projects that include sanitation plants and solar panels, as well as ways for students to participate locally.

As Lang begins to look at colleges, her heart is set on those that allow her to obtain a major in International Relations. She plans on pursuing a career in volunteer work along with continuing her organization after she graduates. Lang is looking forward to building an irrigation canal this summer in the Sacred Valley of Peru.

“Helping others in need is what I do best,” said Lang. “I love volunteer work, and I hope to continue to build healthier lives and communities for the rest of my life.”

Lang cherishes the memories and relationships that have grown out of her volunteer work around the world, and she hopes to continue to heal the world one village at a time.
