On Feb. 8, Dong Nguyen, creator of Flappy Bird, tweeted that on Feb. 9, the game was going to be removed from the App Store. Nguyen’s statement quickly caused an uproar of disapproval. Twenty-two hours later, the app was removed from the App Store.  However, anyone who had Flappy Bird previously installed still has the ability to play the game, leading to further discontent.

Since Flappy Bird can no longer be downloaded, fans of the game are resorting to buying phones off eBay that already have the app installed. The price of these phones has reached up to $90,000. Thus far 68 bids have been placed on one phone by 21 different bidders.

“I think it is kind of silly for people to buy phones just to get one single app,” said sophomore Jaya Logani. “I know the game can be addicting, but it should not be taking over people’s lives.”

The Flappy Bird craze has been going on for a few months now and more and more people are becoming addicted to the game. There have even been multiple copies of the app, including Flappy Penguin, Clumsy Bird and Flappy Bee. However, according to app sales, Flappy Bird fans are not as impressed with these apps as they are with the original Flappy Bird. Since May of 2013 when the app was released, Flappy Bird has been downloaded around 50 million times and is still gaining popularity amongst fans.
