Family Feud

Family+Feud

Dear Chelsea,

In recent weeks it seems that my siblings and I have been constantly fighting. We are always getting on each other’s last nerves especially as stress of school takes over. I feel like I hardly ever spend time with my brothers and sisters and I feel us drifting apart. How can I balance everything else in my life and still have time for my family? How can we stop our mindless arguments and learn to get along like we used to?

-Family Feud

Dear Family Feud,

I have come to the conclusion that it is the duty for all siblings to push each other’s buttons and make each other’s lives both miserable and amazing. Siblings are the ones that you love the most but are also the ones that get on your nerves the most.

Making peace with your brothers and sisters is a joint effort; it will take both sides to cease the fighting. However, you can always be the bigger person and be the first to show that you want to get along.

Start small! Thank and compliment your sibling when they deserve it. Realizing how much they do for you will also make you appreciate them and will hopefully prevent fighting. Next, really think about why you guys are fighting; often times it will be over petty arguments (like who had the remote first or who drank the last of the milk). Don’t make a big deal out of little things like that, the bickering and fighting are not worth picking who gets the last DVR slot…just let it go. Sometimes you won’t even be able to recall why you are fighting. If you aren’t even able to remember why you are mad then maybe you shouldn’t be.

Organize a day out with your sibling/siblings. Put aside everything else you might be dealing with and focus on having a good time and bonding with your siblings. A spa day with your sister or a lunch date with your brother are perfect ways to catch up and enjoy yourselves. When you are ready bring up your feelings in a calm and respectful manner. See if you can get to the root of the problem and hopefully build your relationship from there. Remember,  as friends and lovers come and go, your family will always be there for you.
