A couple of years ago I was on a mission to find the perfect journal.  I went to multiple stores looking for the optimal size, color, and design.  I finally found a blue notebook with a floral design and grey elephants on the front cover.  Surprisingly this journal is not a stress reliever for myself, but it is for the sole purpose of documenting my friendship with my best friend.

After we got the idea of documenting our friendship from her mother, my best friend and I were very eager to get started.  We promised that on each of our birthdays we would give the journal to one another to fill with memories from the past year.

Each year around her birthday, I sit down on my bed with a black ballpoint pen and try to let the memories flow onto the paper.  Flashbacks of late night talks, boys who broke our hearts, obnoxious hairstyles, Hannah Montana jam sessions and ridiculous photo shoots race through my mind.  An hour passes by and I find myself wishing to slow down time and looking at a blank piece of paper.

Unfortunately, this journal has remained empty for about three years now.  There is certainly not a lack of things to write down in the journal; I just cannot figure how to convey our precious memories and friendship into words.

My best friend and I no longer consider ourselves ‘friends.’  We are sisters.  We have been in each other’s lives for seven years.  That is seven years of uncontrollable laughter, contagious smiles, mass amounts of tears and an unnecessary amount of greasy fast food.  I have come to the conclusion that our friendship is more then just smudged words written across a lined piece of paper.

After much thinking and reminiscing, I realized that we do not need to write down these events because they are too important and maybe a little too funny to forget.  We make new memories every single day and there is no possible way to capture these extraordinary events in words.  It is okay that we did not “sign our cards and letters BFF” because these memories will be with us forever.  Although the future is inevitable and at some point will have to go our separate ways, we will always find our way back to each other’s side.
