When in Rome

When in Rome

*Note from the writer: read in a sarcastic, over dramatic tone.*

Here I sit and sigh, experiencing all of the usual emotions that come with senior year: senioritis, wondering why I am still in a math class, anxious beyond belief about college admissions, hating everyone (jk ily all…), wanting to leave and become an adult, sheer boredom, etc.  Most of all, however, I find myself annoyed with the current college admissions offices.  This year we seniors were all on top of our game and most of us took the opportunity to hear back from colleges sooner by applying Early Action.  But, that was just too bad because countless schools deferred countless numbers of applicants with the simple reason of, “We just had WAY too many applicants and could not deal.”  To me, this is just a lame excuse.

What if we high school students walked into a class and said to the teacher “Wow, I just had TOO MANY homework assignments, I could not do the one for your class?”  That would be completely unacceptable.  Or, imagine a doctor insisting, “I have far too many patients to save your life today, sorry ‘bout it.”  Or a chef of a bustling restaurant saying, “There are too many orders; those 5 tables do not get food.”  The list goes on and none of these acts of lethargy would be present in a productive society.  College admissions officers have ONE JOB all year that lasts around 4 months, and they are telling us they had too many applications to deal with?  It sounds like they need a reality check to get on board with the rest of us who fulfill whatever duties are presented to us, in a timely manner.

Now, all I am left with is a heavy heart, wondering how thoroughly these colleges truly looked at our applications, or if they even looked further than our grades for the first cut.  The suspense may, in fact, be killing me, and all of my fellow seniors, as we sit in the H building unsure if we will ever be able to flee from this bubble and study where our hearts desire.  Currently, the answer is a firm “maybe.”

Thank you for reading my rant.  I just want to go to college.  I realize that these are, as my dear mommy would say, good problems to have.
