The Huntington Gardens

The Huntington Gardens

The enchanting Botanical Gardens at the Huntington Library are one of Los Angeles’ best hidden treasures. Located outside the bustling city, the gardens are ideal for couples desiring a “sweet escape”. “The Gardens are very romantic, filled with scenic pathways that are secluded and peaceful,” said Director of Public Relations, Lisa Blackburn. “It is a beautiful place to spend the day with someone that you love.”

The historical gardens were created by millionaire Henry Huntington in 1903 and his superintendent William Hertrich. Both were curious to experiment with the exotic vegetation foreign to the Southern Californian area. The exhibit first began with the planting of fruit orchards and later expanded to the creation of lily and desert gardens. Looking to uncover a variety of exotic plants, the founders traveled the world searching for new and surprising additions to augment the grounds.

An afternoon at Huntington Gardens makes one feel as if he or she has ventured worldwide to see China’s cherry blossom trees, Australia’s fragrant orange groves and the English countryside. Guests can also lounge in the quaint tea room located in the Huntington rose garden.

From traditional lily ponds to exotic jungle gardens, there is a collection to please all guests. Thousands of botanists regularly travel to the Huntington Gardens, eager to observe the vast collection of 14,000 plants spread over 200 acres. While exploring the grounds, visitors may come across the world famous “corpse flower,” which attracts tourists from around the world with its size, potent scent and beauty.

“My favorite aspect of [the gardens] is the amazing variety of flowers and plants,” said junior Niamh Grunfeld. “Though I have [visited] the gardens several times, I never get bored of admiring the beauty [that surrounds me].”

A trip to the Huntington Gardens will be sure to capture the essence of Valentine’s day. The scenic environment leaving one’s sweetheart with everlasting memories worthy of the phrase, “happily ever after”.

Even if one is unable to visit the idyllic gardens this Feb. 14th, the romantic oasis remains the ideal getaway for love birds year round.
