“The Happy Show” at the Museum of Contemporary Art

The Happy Show at the Museum of Contemporary Art

The Museum of Contemporary Art at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood is hosting a new installation, dubbed “The Happy Show.” The exhibit is currently open and will conclude on June 9. Brought to Los Angeles by Austrian graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister, “The Happy Show” is a compilation of interactive videos, exhibits and presentations that explore the idea of happiness. Based on Sagmeister’s ten-year voyage for happiness, the exhibition presents typographic examinations of proverbs, originally amassed from Sagmeister’s diary. These maxims are manifested in a variety of imaginative and interactive forms.

The two-story exhibit, open for guests to wander and walk around without a guide, is fashioned in an art-deco manner. The first floor features an array of photographs that are compiled and arranged to spell out different phrases that advise guests on how to be happy. Also featured on the first floor are several different videos that explore the relationship between wealth and happiness and compare materialistic goods to stages of happiness.

The second story displays various hands-on videos that are visually engaging for all ages. Also on display is a stationary bike that invites guests to take a ride. Once the rider starts pedaling, the facing wall illuminates in changing neon signs that express different mottos and antidotes. These proverbs include phrases such as “All I set out to do increases” and “I have to ask for what I want,” meant to inspire and prompt guests to reflect on their lives. Once the rider stops pedaling, the illuminated sign stops as well; this motivates guests to reach for their goals and keep working toward their aspirations.

Sagmeister collaborated with Harvard psychologists, anthropologists and historians to create the exhibit. Combining information and visually innovative designs, Sagmeister tests the boundaries between art, design and the philosophy of happiness. “The Happy Show” is truly an exceptional exhibit that offers guests an art experience that will leave them inspired and with a better perception on how to achieve happiness in their life.
