The year is 2002. It is the week before prom as Orly Shani (below) browses the numerous clothing racks of a local thrift store. There, she is inspired by one-of-a-kind clothing styles and imagines a beautiful gown unlike any other. Her vision is clear, and she yearns to bring it to life. After months of dedication to her project, Shani takes pride in her finished work of art. Now an entrepreneur and designer, the CHS alumni has a voice of her own in the world of fashion.

Discovering her interest for design in high school, Shani established her first collection called “Orly Couture” in 2006. She then used the foundation produced by her collection to create her Tuc+Wes line (pictured right), clothing shaped for comfort and convertibility.

picture-20“I want people to be able to put on my brand of clothing and instantly feel more confident, “ said Shani.

Tuc+Wes began as a collection of convertible t-shirts. Because the shirts can convert into different forms, this allows costumers to express their own style. It was the Tuc+Wes collection that soon earned her a spot on the National Broadcasting Company reality television show Fashion Star, which focuses on finding the next big brand.

Tuc+Wes has now grown into a full women’s wear collection, ranging from wide-leg trousers and reversible skirts to comfortable cardigans and stylish cut-out dresses. Shani will launch a new line of tees on tucandwes.com at the end of this month.

On the show, Shani continues to impress the judges, contestants and viewers with her skill for designing. The experience that she has been given puts her one step closer to developing abrand that has universal appeal.

“The show really pushes [the designers] to search, discover and fine tune [their] own brands,” said Shani.“It is great because the more people that see [my] brand and style, the more they are going to understand who [I am] as a designer.”

Shani’s goal is to one day build a brand around herself and Tuc+Wes. She aims to keep moving forward in her career by continuing to produce clothing that represents her as not only a designer but also an everyday, relatable woman from New York.

“I [can] create something out of nothing,” said Shani. “In order to achieve, it is all about working hard for opportunity. I think you can make anything out of your life just as long asyou’re willing to push, hustle, work and dream.”

CHS became her runway for establishing herself in the fashion world, as it was truly where she discovered her own style. For Shani, fashion is a creative outlet that allows her to do something she loves in both aspects of design and business. With each new idea, Shani is able to transcend the boundaries of fashion.
