While most teenagers struggle to find ways to express themselves, sophomore Brandon Soriano and freshmen Gavin Gottlich and Canyon McColm have found their voices and are not afraid to use them.  Soon after meeting each other, they realized that they could combine their love for rock and roll to create music.

The self-proclaimed hard-rock group The Krooks was initially founded by lead singer and guitar player Gottlich and drum player McColm when the two were in middle school.  Upon entering high school, the duo was looking for a compatible bass player and Soriano seemed like a perfect match.

“Brandon works well with the band because he helps us write music and overall he is a really fun to jam with,” said Gottlich.  “The three of us are in sync and work better together than ever. What makes us work well together is that we have the same interests in music.”

The Krooks covers rock songs from bands such as Nirvana and artists like Led Zeppelin who they idolize.  The band also works fervently to compose its own music.  Recently, Gottlich and his sister, Emily, a CHS alumnus, have been recording new songs for the band.  She provides meaningful lyrics about love and emotion, and he incorporates the classic 90s rock sound that The Krooks emulates.

“We write music that we could see ourselves listening to,” said Gavin Gottlich.  “It gives us an escape from everything else in our lives, whether it be a bad day at school or something else.  We use music as an outlet and as a way to express ourselves.”

Hoping to gain recognition locally, the band first played at various venues in the San Fernando Valley.      In the upcoming months, The Krooks will be playing at the Whisky A Go Go, as well as Topanga Days.  The band is also enrolled in a prestigious Battle of the Bands at the House of Blues.  In addition, the band will be opening for Steven Adler, the lead drummer of Guns N’ Roses.  The Krooks looks forward to sharing its punk rock sound with the audiences of the revered rock legend.  The band has high aspirations for its future in the music industry.
