New Five-Star point system offers rewards for students who attend CHS events

New Five-Star point system offers rewards for students who attend CHS events

At the beginning of the second semester, ASB implemented a new point system, the Five-Star system, to reward students who attend school-sponsored functions or who exemplify exceptional school spirit. The points earned by the system will be redeemable for school-related prizes at the end of each school year.

The point system was enacted in order to promote good behavior and increase school spirit among CHS students. It has already gained support from the administration and sports department.

“The system was designed to highlight positive things that our students are doing and to promote attendance at events that people do not usually go to,” said ASB advisor Dr. Michael Raleigh.

Five-Star has three levels of achievement. By earning 100 points, students will be given a small, school-spirit related prize such as a “Pack” shirt or key chain. With an accumulation of 175 points, students will receive a coyote back pack, a steel water bottle and VIP seating at school events. Those who earn 250 points or more will be awarded with significantly discounted tickets to prom and other dances and temporary parking spaces in the staff lot. Additionally, the grade that attains the most points will receive a special prize that has not yet been determined.

ASB has purchased three identification card scanners that automatically add points to a student’s I.D. card. Though scanners are loaned out to CHS sports teams during games and fundraisers to encourage attendance, the limited amount of scanners requires that each team uses the scanners a limited number of times. The points for each event are determined by the price of the school function. Free events, such as sports games and blood drives are worth a considerably less amount of points than events that students must pay for.

“The main reason we created Five-Star was to increase attendance and school spirit at all events,” said junior vice president Aaron Sugano. “We [believe that] the way for students to have the most positive high school experience is to partake in the wide variety of school events available.”

ASB expects the Five-Star system to greatly increase student attendance at sporting events and school functions. Many students are excited about the points and the prize incentives it creates.

“I think the new point system is a great idea,” said freshman Brooke Kelsberg. “I already attend many events at CHS, so I am happy that I will now be recognized for supporting my school.” •
