Recently, construction workers installed a costume conveyor belt inside the costume room in the Performing Arts Education Center.  On Oct. 8, the Las Virgenes Unified School District Assistant Superintendent, Karen Kimmel, proposed a plan to install a costume storage conveyor in the CHS and Agoura High School PAECs.

The purpose of the conveyor is to store all of the theater program costumes in an organized and easily accessible way.  The costume storage conveyor will be used to hold all of the theater program costumes and an inventory will be kept in order to keep record of all of the items. The proposal to get the conveyor installed was recently approved by LVUSD and the CHS theater program will have full access to this new technology for the next show.

The conveyor belt encompasses the entire ceiling of the designated costume room inside the PAEC.  Before the costume conveyor was installed, ladders were used in order to reach costumes that were stored higher on the walls.  The new design is intended to improve the efficiency in which the theater students can acquire the costumes they need at any time without the use of dangerous ladders that can put students at risk of injury.

“The conveyor belt is really going to allow us to use the limited amount of space of the costume room to the full potential,” said CHS Theater I, II and III teacher and show director Bill Garrett.  “That is the purpose of the conveyor design, so we can take advantage of the footprint of the building.”

The costume room that houses the new conveyor belt is shared between the theater students and costume design students.  Now that the conveyor belt will hold all of the costumes, students who are memebers of the costume design program will have more room to create costumes.  Students believe that this new design allows for a more efficient way to utilize the space because the conveyor organizes all of the costumes in one place.

LVUSD officials expect the conveyor belt to be very useful for students who work with the costumes as well as the performers.

“The costume conveyor belt will help with the organization of costumes,” said senior Taylor Snook.  “Shows will definitely run a lot smoother now that we have the conveyor since the costume room tends to get very hectic.”

With the installation of the costume conveyor system, the CHS PAEC is near completion.  By the end of next month, the PAEC will be complete for the upcoming fall play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
