Plastic surgery proves to be detrimental to teens

Plastic surgery proves to be detrimental to teens

Overwhelmed by societal pressures, many teenagers are turning to plastic surgery to enhance their features and meet the standards of “beauty.” Although these procedures may appear to be an easy solution, they are unnecessary, dangerous and costly. Additionally, these procedures will force teenagers to rely solely on their physical appearance, as surgery puts more emphasis on the importance of outer beauty rather than personality traits. If teenagers receive plastic surgery, they are prioritizing their physical appearance and stripping away their individuality. Due to their artificial features that are commonly based off those of another person, they no longer have characteristics that set them apart from others.

“I think that people should be happy with their appearance,” said an anonymous senior. “Cosmetic surgery is ridiculous because it shows self-consciousness rather than confidence in their own skin.”

Plastic surgery for young adults is very dangerous. During adolescence, not all physical features are fully developed, making surgery likely premature. Therefore, if a teenager delays undergoing plastic surgery, his or her problematic areas will potentially change significantly. Dangers, including death, infection and permanent scarring, are intensified for younger men and women, as their immune systems are not nearly as developed as those of a full-grown adult.

“I think teenagers are too young to make drastic changes to their bodies,” said junior Jenna Brownrout. “Teens should wait until they have fully matured before they consider major cosmetic surgical procedure.”

Because plastic surgery is not a vital procedure, it is not covered by insurance. Teenagers wishing to achieve this warped sense of perfection consequently waste their money or their parents’ money. The costs of most plastic surgery procedures range from $15,000 to $25,000. This large sum of money could be used for other purposes such as tuition for college. Although teenagers suffer from insecurities, plastic surgery is never the only solution. The decision to undergo cosmetic surgery alters teenagers’ prominent features, ultimately changing the way they look and the way their peers perceive them. No longer unique, teenagers who undergo plastic surgery look more like Barbie dolls than themselves. With heavy costs and severe risks, plastic surgery should not be an option for teenagers.
