Q: Dear Chelsea,
Last year I took easy courses so I could still have time to hang out with friends and do extracurriculars. But as college approaches, I realized I have to challenge myself and take accelerated courses. Now I am overwhelmed with work and I find myself spending my weekends at home editing essays and solving rigorous math problems. How do I balance my social life with my academics?
-Too much work
A: Hey, Too much work! It is great that you have taken initiative and are challenging yourself with harder classes and extracurriculars. As we advance through high school not only is our course work more difficult, but we are also faced with the immense stress of college preparation. At times we can turn into walking zombies, spending all weekend at home, in our pajamas, studying for the upcoming chemistry test. As we stress over our piles of school work, we tend to neglect our social lives. To be on the top of our game, we need to find the perfect balance of school and fun; here are some useful tips!
1) Get Organized!
When everything is organized and neat, you will be much less stressed and frantic. Create binders or files to put your notes, study guides, homework, etc. so that it is easy to find and you won’t lose anything. Also, buy an agenda to write down schedule times and to-do lists. When you create a schedule and stick to it, you might find that a lot of time opens up!
2) Combine Work with Play!
Joining friends for a study session, club, or community service event can be much more fun than going solo. Join a cause you all care about and volunteer together. Pretty soon, it won’t even feel like work. Time will fly when you have friends by your side!
3) Set Time Aside for Fun!
As important as they may seem, academics cannot be the only thing in your life. Time to relax, hang out, party, or do absolutely nothing is essential to keeping yourself from going crazy. When making a schedule, set specific break times to do whatever you want. Don’t deny yourself from fun, everyone deserves a break once a while. So, do some retail therapy, watch a movie, hang out with friends, or read some amazing articles from the CHS Courier 🙂 !
