Following the extreme lack of ticket sales, the upcoming CHS Spring formal “Glow” has been canceled by ASB.
“Unfortunately due to low ticket sales we will be canceling the dance schedule for 3/8,” wrote CHS Assistant Principal of Student Services Miriam Worth via Parent Square.
According to ASB Advisor Kelly Ortiz, the dance was canceled as a result of only 10 tickets being sold. This came as a shock to ASB, as over 500 CHS students requested a spring dance in a previous poll they conducted.
“The dance is being canceled because only 10 tickets were sold and we will lose too much money if we throw a dance for 10 people” said Ortiz, “I would also like to add that ASB did a poll whether students wanted a spring dance and over 500 students said yes. That’s why we actually planned it because we were speaking to the students’ needs, but clearly that did not follow through.”
Ortiz highlighted that out of the ten students who purchased tickets, around half of them were ASB students, portraying the efforts to advertise the event as a failure.
“Half of the kids who actually bought tickets were ASB kids” said Ortiz. “We have publicized for weeks. We’ve done the most publicity we’ve done for an activity on social media. We sent emails home, we had flyers and posters up, we just talked about in homerooms and spent time making announcements.”
As a result of this disappointment, ASB members have expressed their unhappiness. Even as members try to appeal to the desires of its peers, the lack of student spirit and student engagement is becoming frustrating for members of ASB.
“Bringing up school spirit has been a challenge all year. We’re trying to do things that students will take interest in which is why we plan to dance but nothing came of it and we’re very frustrated.” said Ortiz. “ASB works really hard to do fun things for the students and it would be nice for the students to contribute and participate. We’ve asked for suggestions, we’ve asked what students want and there’s no participation after we do what they want, so it’s just frustrating.”
For students who purchased tickets, they will be refunded, according to Worth.
“Anyone who has purchased a ticket already will be issued a refund,” said Worth
Although the dance will not come to fruition, CHS administrators stress their gratitude to CHS ASB’s hard work.
“Thanks to ASB for their planning!” said Worth.
