These must-see movies are coming to the big screen in 2018

Starting off the new year means looking forward to all the new upcoming movies being released in 2018. Movies are often defining of a year with people always remember the year’s biggest successes and award winners. In 2018, many movies are set to hit the big screen.

First, the new addition to the Marvel Universe has fans jumping with excitement. Avengers: Infinity War is said to be released on May 4 and will continue the classic series. The film will pick up close to where the story ended in Thor: Ragnarok, but it will also introduce many new characters including Thanos—the main antagonist—and feature a long-awaited crossover between the popular flics Avengers and The Guardians of the Galaxy.

Marvel fans are further sitting on the edges of their seats in anticipation for Marvel Studios newest film Black Panther, which will be released on Feb. 16. This is the first film focused solely on Black Panther’s character, although fans of Marvel movies have seen his character appear in Captain America: Civil War.

For those who favor cartoons over superheroes, A Wrinkle in Time—a remake of a popular classic movie and children’s book series—will be released by Walt Disney Pictures on March 9. The film follows the main character Mia as she gets pulled into a world of magical beings when her father is kidnapped. The film features a star-studded cast of actors such as Chris Pine, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling and Oprah Winfrey.

“I read A Wrinkle in Time in elementary school and I’m really excited to see how they create such an interesting story on screen,” said senior Macayla Loomis.

Next, the time has finally come for fans to get the long-awaited sequel to the fan favorite film Mama Mia, which came out in 2008. Mama Mia: Here We Go Again will follow the character Sophie as she delves into her mother’s past to understand her future. Coming out on July 20, the film stars some Hollywood favorites such as Lily James, Pierce Brosnan, Meryl Streep, Colin Firth and Amanda Seyfried.

Sci-Fi fans are sure to be excited for the release of Ready Player One on March 30. Steven Spielberg will direct this book-to-movie adaptation of the classic novel written by Ernest Cline. Set in a future world where humans are influenced by a video game reality called ‘“The Oasis,” main character Wade Watts will find himself pulled into a full-fledged hunt for an unspeakable prize.

Solo: A Star Wars Story will be released on May 25 and directed by Ron Howard. This film—the long awaited origin story of fan favorite and Star Wars hero Han Solo—stars actors such as Alden Ehrenreich, Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson and Donald Glover.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is the new addition to the magical and deep world of Harry Potter. It will follow the story of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Directed by David Yates, the story will dive deeper into the adventures of Newt Scamander. This anticipated film will be released on Nov. 16 and will star Eddie Redmayne, Zoe Kravitz and Jude Law.

DC Comics’ new addition to the DC movie universe is hero Aquaman’s first stand-alone film, Aquaman, which will be released on Dec. 21. Aquaman will feature Jason Momoa, Amber Heard and Nicole Kidman; this movie has many DC Comics fans eagerly waiting on the edges of their seats.

Incredibles 2, which will be released on June 15, is Pixar Animation’s new, anticipated sequel to the classic animated film Incredibles. Incredibles 2 will star Samuel L. Jackson, Holly Hunter and more. The film is said to follow the story of Elastigirl more heavily than any other character.

“I’m excited to see Incredibles 2 because it comes out on graduation day,” said Leila Yasha. “I remember when the first Incredibles came out; I must have been six or seven, so I’m looking forward to seeing those same characters again.”
