The Calabasas High School Music Program will showcase itself once again in tonight’s annual Winter Concert. The audience will hear from each of the school’s music groups, including A Cappella, Vivace, Harmony, Maestoso, Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, Jazz B, Jazz Combo, Jazz Workshop and Clarinet in a two hour show beginning at 7 p.m. in the CHS PAEC.

Although audience members can expect to hear many of their favorite holiday songs, this performance is not limited to the sound of the holidays, according to Music Department Chair Joshua Barroll. On the contrary, Barroll says that the music department will focus on performing songs that emphasize the talent and skills of this particular class of artists.

“This is the classes’ opportunity to share what we have been working on, so we try to find music that is interesting for the classes and fits their levels,” said Barroll. “And since it’s a winter concert, we sprinkled in some holiday songs.”

This year’s concert features a diverse group of singers and musicians across the board. Groups will not only be performing songs individually, but also collaboratively, including a performance that combines Wind Ensemble and Orchestra. According to Barroll, the Woolsey fire caused the program to lose a great deal of practice time. Therefore, each group will showcase fewer songs, and A Capella will limit their performance to holiday carolling.

Senior Bennett Cohen, however, says the group is just happy they get to perform together.

“While I think carolling is more for the audience’s enjoyment than our own, seeing the joy it brings to people definitely enriches the experience for us,” said Cohen. “We are always grateful and happy to get to perform together, whether the performance is large or small on scale.”
