The multi-talented singer, songwriter, and actress Sabrina Carpenter released her highly anticipated album, “Short n’ Sweet,” following her two hit singles from earlier this year, “Espresso” and “Please, Please, Please.” The title not only perfectly describes her new music but also reflects her 4’11” frame, often styled with pastel mini dresses and go-go boots.
“Short n ‘Sweet” is a relatable blend of pop and country influences, reviving the bouncy, carefree spirit known as glitter gel pen music. With almost 77 million monthly listeners, Carpenter has packed her sixth album with witty yet powerful lyrics that mirror the reality and relatability of modern dating life.
After the internet obsession with her two singles from the album, which became overplayed and worn out, it was time for her to come out with something new. Carpenter delivered just that with a mix of vibrant tracks showcasing her growth as an artist from her days at Disney.
Following a common theme, her sixth album delves into her relationship experience and the spectrum of emotions. Songs like “Taste” and “Coincidence” depict romantic betrayal with a super energetic, upbeat tone. Both songs are incredibly catchy and carry a bit of sass. The official music video for “Taste” holds the #1 spot for trending music with 17 million views on Saturday. It is a mix of comedy and horror featuring fellow childhood Disney actress Jenna Ortega.
Carpenter adopts a more empowering perspective throughout “Good Graces.” The light-hearted pop song inspires confidence and encourages listeners to know their worth. “Juno and “Slim Pickings” both address the search for something meaningful, and “Sharpest Tool” shares her involvement in a situationship. The song confronts the reality of complicated relationships and the typical lack of communication. Each track, especially “Bed Chem,” displays Carpenter’s humorous personality, subtly tied throughout her lyrics.
“Lie to Girls,” along with “Don’t Smile,” is somber, reflecting on past relationships and the complexities of love. One of my favorites on the tracklist is “Dumb & Poetic,” which uniquely combines clever and emotional lyrical work and authenticity.
Overall, “Short n’ Sweet” is a versatile and worthwhile listening experience. However, it would have been better to release it at the beginning of the summer as the songs reflect a more lively seasonal appeal.
