While five active fires consume Los Angeles, thousands of students are forced to stay home as various schools have been canceled. LVUSD, LAUSD, and about seventeen other school districts have closed this past week due to harmful air quality, direct impact, or precautionary measures. Pepperdine University, California Institute of Technology, and UCLA have canceled classes, and some have resorted to online instruction for this past Thursday and Friday. For students at home, here are five ways to stay busy during these devastating times.
#1 – Relaxation and Mindfulness
Despite the importance of staying informed, the abundance of alarming posts and pictures of the destruction and suffering can significantly increase anxiety. This overexposure and uncertainty create added stress, making it difficult for many to function and think clearly. Consider taking breaks from social media and the news. Meditation Apps like Calm, Headspace, or Smiling Mind can help guide you through sessions to ease your mind. Journaling can be beneficial as you express your feelings and reflect on the positive aspects of your life.
#2 – Find ways to help (Volunteering, Donations, Spread Kindness)
Finding ways to help those impacted by the crisis can help decrease feelings of hopelessness as you redirect your energy into making a difference. These conditions might not be fit for physical volunteering. However, students can virtually assist organizations by researching open shelters and restaurants offering food to those who have evacuated. Students can run donations and coordinate fundraising for fire relief. Consider looking through your closet and donating clothes or other necessary household items to people who might have lost their belongings. As wildlife escapes from the fires, be mindful of their passing and leave out a bowl of water. As many suffer from displacement and indirect impact, send a quick text to check on those located in concerning areas and spread positivity by offering emotional support and kindness.
#3 – Indoor Activities (Reading, Board Games, Fitness)
With schools closed and poor air quality, finding ways to distract yourself can help you stay busy and reduce stress. Reading, audiobooks, and podcasts can offer a mental break while helping to pass the time. Social activities like board games and puzzles are good distractions you can do with family, siblings, or evacuees who might be staying with you. YouTube also offers various videos on indoor workouts, such as yoga, pilates, and stretching.
#4 – Entertainment (Music, Movies, TV)
Another great way to stay distracted is through film and television entertainment. Try catching up on the latest season of your favorite show or asking a friend for a new movie recommendation. This free time also offers the perfect opportunity to listen to new music and organize playlists.
#5 – Try a New Hobby
If you want to be more productive, try a new hobby or learn a new skill. Pinterest is always full of ideas for new art projects and recipes. Try scrapbooking with old household magazines, embroidery, cooking a new dish, playing a new instrument, photography, or learning a new language on Duolingo. Create a vision board by printing out inspirational photos or quotes. There are endless possibilities to keep busy.
Remember to stay safe and maintain a positive mindset during these times.
