What happened with Kanye?

Few artists have shaped modern music like Kanye West. Once considered one of the greatest minds in hip-hop, his name now sparks just as much controversy as praise. The question many fans have asked over the last few years is simple: What happened?

Kanye started behind the scenes, producing for Jay-Z and shaping the sound of early 2000s rap, including records such as “Diamonds” from Sierra Leone and Jay-Z’s album, The Blueprint. In 2004, he dropped The College Dropout, which challenged the tough image of mainstream hip-hop. His lyrics were thoughtful, funny, and openly emotional. Albums like Late Registration and Graduation followed, helping to push rap into new, more personal territory.

Then came a significant shift. In 2008, after the sudden death of his mother and the end of a long relationship, Kanye released 808s and Heartbreak. Cold, electronic, and full of pain, the album felt like a breakdown. It was profoundly influential and helped introduce vulnerability and melody to modern rap.

In 2010, Kanye returned with My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, a lush, chaotic album continually called his masterpiece. It balanced ego and regret, excess and honesty. At this point, fans were still rooting for him even after he interrupted Taylor Swift on live TV.

Things started to slip after that. Yeezus was loud and confrontational. The Life of Pablo was brilliant but scattered. Kanye’s public behavior became harder to defend. He wore a MAGA hat, ran for president, and posted cryptic messages online. He spoke openly about living with bipolar disorder, which offered context but not always clarity.

In 2022, Kanye crossed a line. He made a series of antisemitic comments, praised Adolf Hitler in interviews, and partnered with known hate figures. He lost brand deals, support from friends, and nearly all public goodwill. The fallout was swift and global.

His newer music, including Donda, still shows moments of creativity, but it’s been drowned out by controversy. More recently, he released a track titled “Heil Hitler,” which pushed public backlash to new heights. Instead of headlines about his music, the focus has shifted almost entirely to his erratic behavior and offensive statements, including antisemitic rants and disturbing comments about World War III. For many, the damage caused by his words has made it impossible to separate the art from the artist.

Kanye West is no longer just a producer or rapper. He is a reminder of what can happen when genius goes unchecked, and influence turns destructive. His impact on music will never be erased, but his legacy is no longer just about sound. It is also about silence, which follows when fans stop listening.
