Finally, the long months of campaigning and debating are over, and Barack Obama has been voted President of the United States of America for a second term. In this time of economic and social uncertainty, the nation looks to a president who has demonstrated that he is able to make progress, however gradually, to lead us again to prosperity. While some affluent voters remain weary of the President’s policies regarding taxation and universal health care, Obama has proven that he is focused and determined to help the majority of the population, the middle and lower classes, rather than those who own the vast percentage of the nation’s wealth. The President’s victory is not only a victory for those who are not financially secure but it is also a victory for women and other minorities. While the country has made incredible social progress regarding women and minority rights in the last century, Romney and the Republican Party threatened to destroy it, vowing to repeal same-sex marriage, overturn Roe V. Wade and end federal assistance programs like FEMA. While these views largely represent the most conservative of the Republican party, Obama struggled to work with Republicans during his first four years in office. Hopefully, with the skills and experience from his first term, the President will be able to create a truly bipartisan government that represents the diversity in thought and opinion of the population.
