The Calabasas High School cross-country season is coming to an end, and the Coyotes have made great strides. Coach Christopher Martinez thought that this season was a step in the right direction.
“I feel every year we are getting better,” said Martinez. “We started with a small team when I first got here. A lot of people quit and had a negative view of cross country. I have slowly been building it back up.”
On the girls’ side, Martinez noted that they are making improvements with strong individual runners like senior Sofia Francini and freshman Hannah Miller.
“Sofia Francini will probably make it to state,” said Martinez. “Last time I checked, she was ranked 15 in the whole state as an individual. She will probably be one of the few girls who makes it to state. As a team, we haven’t gotten to that point yet.”
Martinez said the boys were one of the best boys’ teams in recent years in terms of depth. This shows in their personal records, which show multiple accomplishments.
“For the first time, we’ve had five boys at 17 minutes or below, with our top boy Nathan Anderson, who is a sophomore, running 15:53,” said Martinez. “A big thing for everyone else on JV is consistently improving throughout the season. We’ve had so many PRs. I see it as a success.”
Overall, cross country has been impressive this season and was more successful than past seasons.
