Yesterday, CHS girls’ tennis continued their playoff success against Woodbridge, winning with an overall score of 14-4. They’ve been one of the best sporting programs across campus, and this run seeks to silence any doubters.
As is customary, the Coyotes announced their starting lineups for set 1: freshman Alena Kolsova, freshman Sophia Loizu, and senior captain Nava Aminian would take the singles courts, while senior captain Sydney Smith/sophomore Charli Kaaya, junior captain Giana Mucci/freshman Maddy Ginsberg, and junior Emma Penev/sophomore Jade Bassis would play doubles.
Set 1 singles started off unusually unsuccessful for the Coyotes – Kolsova lost with a score of 3-6, while Loizu and Aminian got shut out with set scores of 0-6. Doubles went much better as Smith/Kaava and Mucci/Ginsberg won with scores of 6-4, while Penev/Bassis closed out set 1 with a 6-3 score. This put the overall set score at 3-3, with Woodbridge providing one of the toughest tests for the Coyotes throughout their entire season.
Set 2 was a complete reversal for the Coyotes. Loizu and Aminian won 6-4, while Kolsova shut out her opponent. Smith/Kaava and Mucci/Ginsberg continued their winning ways with set scores of 6-3 and 6-1, respectively, while Penev/Bassis lost 6-1. The Coyotes took the overall set score at 8-4, and only needing two more individual set wins to find themselves in the CIF finals, they pushed onto the 3rd set.
The Coyotes secured the win in singles. Kolsova again won 6-0, Loizu won 6-2, and senior Siena Goldfarb came in for Aminian and won her set 6-4. On the doubles side, Smith/Kaava won 6-4, while Mucci/Ginsberg and Penev/Bassis won 6-1 – Penev and Bassis avenging their previous set. The Coyotes won with an overall set score of 14-4, setting up their second consecutive CIF finals match – this time against Westlake at 5:00 P.M. at the University of Redlands. Although the Coyotes lost last year vs. Laguna Beach, they hope the cards are in their favor this year.
“We’re looking for a redemption story,” said Goldfarb.
