The 2024-2025 season has officially begun for all winter sports. The winter sports include soccer, basketball, wrestling, and girls’ water polo. Notably, this is the first season at Calabasas that the school is offering a Coyote Winter Pass.
“Now we have pretty much a season pass that gets you into all winter games. It’s 60 dollars, so it’s cheaper than paying for each game,” says Christopher Martinez, the athletic secretary.
Most of the winter sports this season already have good prospects and are hoping to continue to improve.
“Last season, both basketball teams, water polo and wrestling, made it to the postseason playoffs, so they’re trying to continue that. And honestly, they have a great shot of making it to the playoffs again,” says Martinez.
Basketball started its season on Monday. Girls’ basketball beat Cleveland at home, and boys’ basketball started with tournament games. The varsity, JV, and freshman teams were at Heritage Christian, while the sophomore team was at Buena High School in Oxnard.
“I would say we have really good potential, but we have to improve every single day. We have a young team, and sometimes it takes a while for them and new players to really learn about each other and come together,” says head coach Jon Palarz.
Under Charlie Lind’s second year coaching the Calabasas wrestling team, the boys on wrestling attended the Spartan Kickoff Invite in South Torrence. Up against the number six school in the country, Saint John Bosco, they placed nineteenth out of thirty-two and had two medalists. Sophomore Micah Wegman placed fourth, and senior Gabryel Goodwin placed sixth. Boys’ wrestling is headed to the Nordhoff Six Way duals tournament, while the girls are starting their season on Saturday at Valley Girl Rumble.
“We wrestled higher than expectations, but there’s still a lot of work that can be done. Work in which I think that our wrestlers are truly ready to put in,” says Lind.
Girls water polo started on November 12, going to San Marino High in Pasadena for their first game and winning 26-5. Wednesday night, they continued that success against Pasadena High, winning 19-3. They will host a big Tournament at CHS on Friday and Saturday, with 12 teams in attendance.
“We’ve already got a few wins, and we’re hoping to continue that. The season is going to be full of competitive games that I’m looking forward to being in, and I’m excited to play at a higher level than ever before and to get closer to the team,” says junior captain Taylor Credle.
Wednesday night, boys’ soccer played its first game against Canoga Park and tied 0-0. This will be the team’s first season under head coach Eliiott Otmoni. Having missed the playoffs last year, they are looking for a shot at redemption. Girls’ soccer played its preseason home game last night against Cleveland and lost 3-0.
“Pretty much every varsity [team] started off their season with a win and soccer tied. So starting off strong on all winter sports,” says Christopher Martinez.
