After a rocky 5-5 start to the season, Calabasas Boys Basketball has hit its stride, winning six of its last seven games, capped by claiming the championship at the SoCal Christmas Classic.
The Coyotes began tournament play against Providence High School with a 65-58 victory. Senior Grayson Coleman and Junior Tristan Cardoso led the scoring, contributing 22 and 19 points, respectively. Calabasas then extended their win streak to four against Hart High School, narrowly winning 65-62. Coleman once again topped the scoring with 19 points, while Josh Ness and Johnny Thyfault contributed 13 and 10 points.
In the semifinals, the Coyotes matched up with Polytechnic High School and secured a 67-56 victory, moving to 10-5 on the season. Grayson Coleman led the team with 23 points, while Johnny Thyfault and Calvin Goetz each added 11 points, and Tristan Cardoso contributed 9 points.
Calabasas was in cruise control during the championship game, defeating Crescenta Valley 76-61. Transfer Johnny Thyfault led the charge with 25 points, followed by Grayson Coleman’s 20, Josh Ness’s 14, and Tristan Cardoso’s 10, securing the Coyotes’ title as the 2024 SoCal Christmas Classic Champions.
With his 84 total points for the Coyotes, Grayson Coleman was named MVP of the tournament, capping off an outstanding all-around effort.
“I think we definitely have improved throughout the season with our team chemistry,” said Coleman. “Starting the season with only a few returners was challenging but getting all the transfers back has definitely helped in that aspect.”
After a tough 79-61 loss to El Camino Real on Friday night, Calabasas will look to bounce back and open their Marmonte League season with a win against Westlake at CHS tonight.
