Sophomore wrestler Micah Wegman did what only one other person in CHS history did over the last week by making it to the California State Championships. Like Marius Male before him, though, Wegman went 1-2 and was knocked out in the consolation bracket.

Wegman started off his journey at State by facing off against Gilroy High School’s Isaiah Cortez, who is committed to Cornell. Cortez, a senior, was the 3rd seeded wrestler in the 126-pound weight class and would go on to win the entire State Championship at that weight class. At Gilroy, where he’s coached by former MMA icon Daniel Cormier, he’s had a decorated high school career, winning the tournament for the first time as a sophomore in 2023 and coming in 3rd during his freshman and junior years. This experience showed; Cortez would pin Wegman in only a minute and 40 seconds, sending Wegman to the consolation bracket.

In Wegman’s first round in the consolation bracket, he matched up against Jovani Sandoval, representing Elk Grove High School. For Wegman, this went much better: in 3 minutes exactly, Wegman brought the match score to 17-2, which resulted in a technical fall, wrestling’s version of the mercy rule. In the California State Championships, the necessary amount of points to reach a technical fall is 15.

With that win versus Sandoval, Wegman reached the consolation bracket’s round of 16, where fellow sophomore Cruz Contreras of Aptos High School would be his next opponent. Unfortunately for Wegman and all of the Calabasas faithful, his bout with Contreras would end more like his first match. Contreras won with a score of 16-5, sealing Wegman’s early fate out of the tournament. Even though he didn’t advance past the round of 16, head coach Charlie Lind is still more than happy about the experiences and abilities Wegman developed at State.

“Matching up against the kid who ended up winning state isn’t the most ideal scenario, but he did a lot better than he did against [Cortez] earlier in the year,” said Lind. “He’s still got a long way to go. We were given a lot of great things to go into the off-season with and work on, and I have a feeling that in the next year, he’ll be really picking it up when it comes to his wrestling.”

3 days ago, Wegman was also voted as the Ventura County Star’s top boys’ wrestler, receiving 31.84% of the total vote.
