On May 23rd, Calabasas Athletics announced via Instagram the hiring of Jasen Hughes as the CHS girls’ basketball head coach. Hughes replaces Destiny Melton, who resigned earlier this year and took up the job of interim head coach at L.A. Mission College. Last year, Melton’s squad went 8-15.
“Transitioning from player to elite trainer to coach, Jasen brings over 15 years of experience working with athletes at the AAU and high school levels, as well as training collegiate and professional players,” said Calabasas Athletics in a statement.
The Indianapolis native most recently coached at Mount Miguel High School during the 2023-2024 season. He replaced the historically successful Mount Miguel girls’ basketball coach Robbie Sandoval after Sandoval was let go, going 4-25 with a team largely composed of freshmen and sophomores, four of whom had never played organized basketball before.
“As a dedicated coach and mentor, Jasen is committed to providing a positive yet challenging environment that fosters both athletic and personal growth. He emphasizes the development of key life skills such as teamwork, discipline, and leadership, while instilling a deep understanding of the game,” said Calabasas Athletics.
Athletic director Thomas Cassidy expanded on the choice of Hughes to lead the CHS girls’ basketball program.
“He was really impressive in the interview process, with his basketball background, IQ, experience coaching girls’ basketball, developing and handling players, understanding where our program is at, coming in with the mindset of rebuilding the program and improving interest,” said Cassidy.
