On Sept. 14, the third annual CHS Music Fun Run took place at the CHS track. CHS students and alumni took part in this event in order to raise money for the music program. There was live music for the four run option, 5k, 10k, Teen Sprint, and Kids Dash. The live music began at 7:30 a.m. and the races started at 8:15 a.m. Some bands that performed at the run include Contingency Contact, a rock band of freshmen and sophomores and The Oyls, a group of high school and college students. Prices for the 5k and 10k races were $35 until Sept. 13 and went up to $50 on the day of the event. The Teen Sprint and Kids Dash started at $10 and went up to $20 on the day of the event. The Calabasas football program created a team and charged $10 to join. Last year there were 150 people at the run, and this year 190 people attended.
“The mayor and superintendent participated and we had participants from as far away as Texas and Alabama,” said Aaron Kohen, the event coordinator.
The fun run had some new additions this year. First, there was an electronic Global Positioning System that timed each runner. The GPS could tell when a runner started the race. Another new addition to the run was the distribution of awards and finisher medals. The music program decided to add these new technologies to encourage more runners to come the race.
Kohen, a music teacher, first came up with the idea for the Music Fun Run three years ago when he found out that many of his students were either involved in sports or enjoyed running. Three years later, the kids in the music program still love this fundraising opportunity. Kohen wants to use the money from the run to fix and buy new instruments and pay for the musical assistants. Also, money raised from this run will help buy the band classes more written music.
“This year was a big improvement for us, with our third annual race, we hope for more to come out to enjoy and support the music program in the future,” sophomore Kennedy Delaney said.
Overall, the event was a huge success and the music program raised approximately $8,000 for the music program.
