Hillary Clinton

Hillary Clinton is one of the leading Democratic candidates for the 2016 presidential election. Clinton has been a New York senator, first lady and secretary of state. She is against the No Child Left Behind act, which is a reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, a program for helping disadvantaged students. Regarding her stance on immigration, she supports leading undocumented citizens down the path to becoming legal. She is for the legalization of abortion and has said she will wait and see if she feels that marijuana should be legal.

“Clinton strives to encapsulate the ideas of the working class while also appealing to the middle and upper classes,” said senior Aliza Cooperman. “I would trust her to run our country effectively.”

Bernie Sanders

A Democratic candidate for the 2016 presidential election, Bernie Sanders was a Senate committee chairman and mayor of Burlington, Vt. He plans to initiate two years of free tuition at state colleges and to reform student loans. He has a mixed approach in regards to guns, but on the other hand he hopes to help immigrants become documented citizens. He has vocalized his opposition to the war in Iraq and wishes to call for troop withdrawal as soon as possible. Sanders would additionally like to alter health care in the U.S. by transitioning to single-payer government-provided health care.

“Personally, I like Bernie Sanders,” said senior Declan Graham. “He has a profusely consistent point of view on things and he supports causes I believe in as well.”

Donald Trump

Donald Trump is a Republican candidate for the 2016 presidential election.  The billionaire television host manages countless businesses that range from beauty pageants to real estate. Trump believes that climate change is a hoax and the government must cut general spending in order to benefit the economy. He would like to loosen restrictions on guns, offer no path to citizenship for immigrants and repeal Obamacare. Regarding social issues, Trump feels that abortion should be limited and marriage should be between a man and a woman, and that each should be defined by state law.

“Donald Trump has a lot of money and these days money is a source of power,” said senior Ally Goldberg. “I think he feels entitled to a greater amount of power, aka the presidency.”

Jeb Bush

Jeb Bush, a Republican candidate for the 2016 presidential election, is a real estate developer turned two-term Florida governor. He feels as though climate change is a relevant concern, but he is unsure of how humans impact the climate. Regarding education, he believes in implementing the Common Core Standards. Bush would like to extend the rights of gun owners and wishes to pursue social issues such as banning abortion. He opposes same sex marriage and believes that marriage should only be between a man and a woman.

“Jeb Bush is an interesting fellow,” said senior Andrew Isaac. “This election is focused heavily on the idea of breaking the political correctness in Washington and I think Bush is a perfect example of why Americans are frustrated.”
