Bruce Springsteen biopic explores legacy of the rock icon

While the Calabasas community is familiar with the name Bruce Springsteen, many are less aware of his music and the news surrounding the artist. A highly anticipated movie about rock icon Bruce Springsteen hits theaters this fall. The film, titled Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere, focuses on a crucial chapter in the musician’s life and career.

The movie is based on the 2023 book Deliver Me from Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska by Warren Zanes. It traces Springsteen’s process while creating his 1982 album Nebraska. The movie is written and directed by Scott Cooper, who also produced it alongside Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Eric Robinson, and Scott Stuber.

This is the first authorized big-screen dramatization of Springsteen’s life. Rather than covering his entire career, the film zeroes in on a short but intense period when he was recording Nebraska (1982), navigating personal struggles, and making creative choices that defined his path.

According to Pitchfork, Cooper said the story is about something deeper than fame—it’s about “truth over expectation” and a turning point.

Actor Jeremy Allen White, known for his role in The Bear, plays Bruce Springsteen. Jeremy Strong stars as Springsteen’s longtime manager Jon Landau, while Stephen Graham plays Springsteen’s father. The film is produced by 20th Century Studios and supported by Disney’s live-action division.

According to one Google Reviewer, Pamela Blasetti, she stated, “I think it’s very interesting that Bruce decided that this is the part of his life that he wanted exposed to the world. It’s a huge statement, and I think he shared something very intimate and emotional with us, and I have a great respect for that type of honesty from someone of his star power.”

Others shared their views of the message the film conveys on digital platforms.

“It’s not a biopic, it’s an exploration of family ties – particularly between father and son – the lasting impact of childhood trauma, and depression, even if you’re a beloved rock star on the cusp of creating an album that would turn you into a global megastar,” said Paul Beadle, another Google Reviewer.

Much of the movie was filmed in New Jersey, where Springsteen grew up and wrote many of his songs. The production recreated key locations, including his hometown of Freehold and a small home studio that resembled the real-life setting where Nebraska was recorded. Some scenes were also shot in upstate New York to capture the feel of the early 1980s.

The movie Deliver Me from Nowhere is definitely made for true Springsteen fans rather than for viewers expecting nonstop performances of his greatest hits.

“I would strongly suggest that the movie Deliver Me from Nowhere is definitely for the Springsteen aficionado and not really for those expecting reel after reel of so-called hits from the Springsteen canon,” said Fernando Nieto, in a Google review of the movie.

Other viewers commented on how the movie portrayed Bruce Springsteen’s life while making Nebraska, rather than focusing on Bruce Springsteen performing his most well-known songs.

Robert Roten, a Film Critic, commented, “I get the idea from reading the news that there are people who don’t like the Nebraska album, and maybe a lot of people wanted this movie to be like a greatest hits concert movie, but that’s not what it is. Instead, it is a look into Springsteen’s soul, through the window of one specific year of his life and the songs he wrote for this album. It is also a movie that highlights Springsteen’s artistic process.

Peter Travers, a Top Critic for Rotten Tomatoes, stated, “Though it barely scratches the surface of a rock icon’s hungry heart, this sliver of a biopic rises above stagnant writing and directing on the power of watching Bruce Springsteen, studiously acted by Jeremy Allen White, show depression who’s the boss.”

Jeremy Allen White’s performance captures both Springsteen’s intensity and vulnerability. Many reviewers have also commented on the film’s emotional tone and its focus on the creative process rather than fame or fortune.

The film does an excellent job portraying what Springsteen was going through during the making of Nebraska, following his massive success with The River album and world tour. Even though he already had much of Born in the U.S.A. ready—a record that would later skyrocket his fame— he chose to focus on the Nebraska album, going against everyone’s advice. Looking back, this decision became one of the most defining moments of his career.

Some of the most emotional scenes come when Springsteen reconnects with his father and breaks down in his therapist’s office. The best parts of the movie, though, are the ones that focus on how the songs from Nebraska were written and recorded, and how the studio team worked to capture the unique sound Springsteen was searching for. Reflecting on his long career, Springsteen told The Hollywood Reporter that he’s spent 50 years traveling as a “musical ambassador” for America and has seen how much people around the world admire the country’s best values. Based on early audience reactions, some fans seem to have expected more concert moments, but the movie’s real power lies in its honest look at creativity, struggle, and staying true to one’s art.

Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere offers more than just a look at one musician’s career. It is a story about finding purpose through art and staying true to yourself even when success is within reach. For Springsteen fans and movie lovers alike, the film is a powerful reminder that music can come from the quietest, most personal moments.
