Students find focus in their favorite study spots

The glow of the laptop screen, the smell of the warm coffee wafting through the air, and the natural light pouring through the windows create the perfect atmosphere, from a small, cozy coffee shop to a bright table filled with sunlight in the outdoors. All students study differently, and the environment can make all the difference.

Different environments can greatly affect the quality of students’ studying. Finding a place that keeps them motivated and free of distractions is the key. For some, this means a quiet library, and for others, it may mean a desk in their room.

Studies published by PubMed have shown that ambient light, temperature, and noise exert the biggest effect on learning efficiency. In addition to this, a study led by the Dundee Ready Education Environmental Measure found that the environment in which students learn or study significantly influenced both cognitive and behavioral engagement, which directly affected students’ academic performance.

Many students enjoy studying in libraries, bookstores, or the comfort of their bedrooms.

Calabasas High School freshman, Emma Colvin, explains that she enjoys studying in a quiet and calm environment.

“Either a quiet place or Barnes and Noble… I just love the atmosphere there; it puts me into a study mode,” Colvin explained.

9th-grade Calabasas High School student, Morgan Dishlip, explains that she enjoys studying in a quiet room in her house to reduce distractions.

“I prefer studying either in my room or just at my house in a quiet place. It’s easier to focus,” Dishlip said.

Emily Pearlman, a freshman at Calabasas High School, explains that she enjoys studying in her bed.

Definitely in my bed with some snacks… My bed is super comfy and it puts me in a studying state.

Overall, students find comfort in different study areas. Some might thrive in a comfy, cozy spot, while others might thrive in a bright room away from distractions. No matter where it is, the best study area is one that is free from distractions and helps you stay motivated.
