Carlie Algas has always felt the need to create and express in different ways. This need ultimately sparked her interest in pursuing a career that revolves around art and more specifically, fashion illustration.
During her high school years, Algas experimented with various mediums of expression, allowing her to determine which ones she liked and disliked. One summer she took a figure drawing class at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco; however, she quickly realized that this class was not fit for her.
“My instructor was really strict,” said Algas. “We were only allowed to use messy charcoal, my now least favorite medium.”
In an effort to try something new, she decided to take a fashion illustration class this past summer. On her first day, she instantly knew that the atmosphere was much more relaxed as she saw that she was allowed to truly express herself. She was encouraged to try new templates and had the freedom to interpret and manipulate what she saw.
“It was awesome to see how everyone had such a different take on the same pose,” said Algas. “I liked to design outfits based on the attitude they gave off.”
After taking this class, Algas realized how art and fashion are intertwined. She has taken Costume Design at CHS and plans on majoring in Fashion Merchandising at the Academy of Art University this fall. She hopes to be a visual designer for stores, fashion shows and magazines.
