On Dec. 6, Calabasas High School athletic director Jon Palarz confirmed that Chris Claiborne had resigned from the head football coach position at Calabasas to pursue a coaching career in college.

“We want to thank Coach Claiborne for his hard work and devotion to our football team,” said the CHS administration. “We wish him well as he pursues the next steps in his coaching career.”

Claiborne took over for Casey Clausen two years ago, turning Calabasas High School into a football powerhouse; winning this year’s Marmonte League title and playing in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 Playoffs.

“I’m thankful for the opportunity and look forward to the future,” said Claiborne.

During his last year at Calabasas, Claiborne coached numerous talented seniors, including quarterback Jaden Casey, wide receivers Jermaine Burton and Johnny Wilson, defensive back Lamont Narcisse and running back Jyden King.

Claiborne brought in an elite coaching staff composed of offensive coordinator Curtis Conway and defensive coordinator Eric King, both of whom have formerly played in the NFL. According to Claiborne, some coaches will stay at Calabasas while others will pursue other opportunities. He would not identify who would leave or stay.

“The future [of Calabasas Football] will depend on the players and coaches,” said Claiborne. “It could be great!”

Palarz, along with Assistant Principal of Athletics, Martin Freel, will head the school’s search for a replacement head coach. Freel has been reaching out to recommended coaches as well as taking phone calls and emails from people who are interested.

“We have a number of applicants; people we know, as well as people who discovered the position, is open and expressed their interest,” said Palarz.

Palarz could not share any names of the coaches that the administration is considering. “We’re excited about some of the candidates who are interested in coaching our team,” said Palarz.

CHS hopes to fill the head coach vacancy before the season starts next school year.
