Grit, heart, and determination. Those three words best describe Calabasas junior wrestler, Micah Wegman. Throughout his high school career, Wegman has shown not only his talent, but his hard work and passion for wrestling. Wegman has gone to back-to-back CIF finals in his sophomore and junior years, proving to be one of the best wrestlers in the state of California.

Before arriving at Bakersfield, where the CIF finals were  held, Wegman received an ultimate send off from teachers, administrators, and students. The Calabasas High School band helped make the send off as special as it could be.

Wegman discussed the importance of the support he received.

“It’s inspiring having school pride and culture supporting me. I think it’s important for Calabasas to develop its school pride and culture if it’s going to be successful in anything,” Wegman said.

The atmosphere of CIF finals is unlike anything most high school athletes experience. With the size of the arena, unruly noises and energy from the crowd, and media coverage displayed all over, it draws a whole new perspective for these high school athletes.

Wegman shared how much of an honor and privilege it is to experience an event like this.

“It is awesome and inspiring to compete with and be part of the best. The atmosphere is electric towards the end,” Wegman said.

Wegman competed against the very best talent the state of California has to offer in high school wrestling. Wegman performed greatly in the first round and continued in the win column in the round of 32. Wegman’s pursuit of winning CIF came up short, as he suffered a loss in the round of 16.

Even with coming up short this year, Wegman remains determined to improve on his craft and most importantly, set goals for his senior year.

“I need to improve and get better at various things,” Wegman said.

He also described his hope of accomplishing both individual and team successes.

“My goal is to be the number one wrestler in California next year and lead the team to a CIF title,” Wegman said.

Wegman’s successes and achievements throughout his first three years at Calabasas shows his commitment and work ethic to not only his team, but the entire school. Don’t be surprised to see Wegman’s name pop right back into CIF finals, and next time around a pursuit to win it all in his final year.
