After just one season, Jasen Hughes has stepped down as head coach of the Calabasas High School girls basketball team. Originally from Indianapolis, Hughes brought more than 15 years of coaching experience at the AAU, high school, and higher levels. He has a background of being both a player and an elite trainer. His coaching focused on building discipline, accountability, and leadership both on and off the court.

The sudden leave came as a surprise to the team.

Shaniya Franklin, a sophomore guard, said, “At first, it was honestly a shock because no one really expects a change like that. Our coach meant a lot to the program, so it took some time to process.”

But the team chose to stick together through the unexpected.

“As a team, we’ve focused on staying connected. It’s brought us closer and has made us more resilient.”
Franklin emphasized that Hughes’ biggest lessons will last.

“That mindset has become part of our team’s culture and will stick with us no matter who’s leading us.”

“Following Coach Hughes’ departure, our focus is to hire a coach who can establish stability and continuity within the program,” said Athletic Director Thomas Cassidy.

He added that the school is seeking strong leadership and someone who will continue to develop student-athletes. He emphasized the lasting impact Hughes had on both the team and the athletic program as a whole. Cassidy noted that Hughes not only built a competitive program but also helped shape the character and discipline of his players. He also shared his optimistic viewpoint about the next steps of the girls’ basketball program and stated that the search for a new coach will focus on maintaining those same values and expectations.

“We are grateful for our former coach’s time, dedication, and the energy they invested in this program.”

Hughes left no comment regarding his decision to step down from his position.
