Boys Head Basketball Coach Jon Palarz is stepping down from his role after 17 years of coaching.
According to a March 18 press release from the school, Palarz will continue his role as a social science teacher.
“During his 17 years at Calabasas High School, Coach Palarz’s teams compiled a record 345-160, qualifying for the playoffs in 16 seasons, winning 8 league championships, and two CIF championships,” said the announcement.
This announcement comes after a season in which they finished 18-11; winning 11 out of 12 during the midseason and going 6-4 in league play.
“I think anytime a coach resigns, it’s always a little surprising. I think he’s earned the right to step away when he was ready and he felt the time was right. I respect that and appreciate everything that he gave to our school,” said Athletic Director Thomas Cassidy.
Palarz was inducted into the Southern California Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2023. Beyond public recognition, his players echoed his impact as a coach and mentor.
“Palarz helped me realize the work I put in behind the scenes is really gonna end up showing out on the court, so my hard work really does pay off in the long run,” said Tyson Bass, CHS basketball senior.
Bass said Palarz’s resignation came as a surprise.
“It was sad. I was in shock, it was unexpected for me.”
The CHS Athletics Department is looking to fill the position immediately, and it has already been posted.
Palarz and Principal Bennett Wutkee were both unavailable for comment.
