As the regular season has come to an end, 16 teams from both conferences compete for the league championship. Months of success, struggles, and strong determination are what make the playoffs extremely captivating. The playoffs also shine a light on star players, having fans bet on who will win the NBA awards. Jayson Tatum recently came back from a tear in the achilles tendon which is huge for the Celtics offense. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the reigning MVP and lead scorer for the Oklahoma City Thunder. Victor Wembanyama is the 7’4 center of the San Antonio Spurs that brings elite shooting while blocking and intimidating his opponents.
The Detroit Pistons made a huge turnaround from a league-worst to a top seed in the Eastern Conference. The resurgence in leadership and the growth of key players like Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren have carried the team’s defense. The Pistons are currently playing the Orlando Magic in a best-of-seven series, with the Magic holding a 3-1 game lead. The Magic have been showing outstanding defense that has outworked the Pistons in areas that they are normally dominant in.
Across the Western bracket, the Oklahoma City Thunder have risen through the ranks to get to the number 1 spot, drafting smart and trading for strong players. The team’s chemistry symbolizes the league’s future and how rebuilding can quickly turn a season around. The Thunder is known for their defense and aggressive turnover which is very impressive considering that they are the youngest team to secure the number 1 seed. Jalen Williams, Chet Holgren, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander are the top scorers and lead the team in defense.
Teams like the Boston Celtics, who are 2nd in the Eastern Conference and the Los Angeles Lakers, who are 4th in the Western Conference have a chance to advance deep into the playoffs with well-known players.
Sophomore Elai Palatin says, “I think the Lakers are winning it all once Luka and Reaves get better, if they get better, Lebron is 41 years old playing one more season.”
When asked what teams he thinks are going to advance to the semi-finals, sophomore Preston Charlier said, “I think that the Thunder and the Spurs definitely will advance past the first few rounds, especially with Wemby winning Defensive player of the year.”
The playoffs are a time for top teams to work hard to advance further in the finals. Fans are on the edge of their seats watching these intense games praying their team will win. As the games continue, the teams will advance to higher brackets and will reveal who the real champions are.
