After much debate, The Vampire Diaries executive producer Julie Plec has officially earned the rights to produce a Vampire Diaries spin-off. While attending a lunch meeting with the Warner Brothers Television president, Peter Roth, the idea of a TVD spin-off came to mind. Plec immediately urged the idea of centering the new spin-off around the dysfunctional Original Family. The show will be titled The Originals. The drama series has been picked up as part of the fall lineup and will air this fall on the CW network.
In order to smoothly integrate both shows, Plec has been building up the half-vampire/half-werewolf hybrid Klaus to be a lead character for the spin-off during the current season. Throughout season four, we start to see a side of Klaus we have never seen before: his vulnerability. The audience starts to realize the infamous Klaus Mikaelson has a heart (gasp).
The plot for The Originals is set in the illustrious and lively New Orleans, a town Klaus has built from the ground up. Klaus’ main purpose for coming to New Orleans is to stop a possible witch uprising against him. However, when Klaus arrives, he is sidetracked when he runs into his old protégé, Marcel, the new “King of New Orleans.” Klaus realizes he wants to come back to New Orleans to reclaim the throne.
I have been a TVD fan since it initially aired and remember when the Original family was first introduced. As the seasons have progressed, I must say that the dysfunction and sibling rivalry between the Original family has been entertaining to watch, and a spin-off is well deserved. I will be watching The Originals this fall, will you?
