Lower quad renovation completed with ribbon-cutting ceremony

The lower quad renovation at Calabasas High School, led by Principal Bennett Wutkee and LVUSD, was designed to transform what administrators felt was an underused space into a more inviting and functional area for students. The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on Tuesday, February 17, marking the grand opening of a new space for students to enjoy.

Instead of leaving the space boring and cold, the school added a vibrant turf grass and activity area.

Craig Moore, a social studies teacher at CHS, shared his appreciation for the new space.

“It makes students care a little bit more about their environment and surroundings, because it looks better. It will be a nice space for kids to use for years to come,” said Moore.

The stage was pushed against the MPR, closing the awkward gap that stood between the brick wall and planters, while still keeping the area open for spirit weeks and other events. New overhead sail shades now provide relief from the rain or sun, making lunch and nutrition more comfortable.

Some students were unhappy about how the construction disrupted their daily routines after winter break.

Senior Kamden Grof said, “I didn’t like that it happened in the middle of the school year.”

Due to construction noise and lack of mobility in the lower quad, some students had trouble focusing in class.

Grof said, “It is definitely a great space for people to hang out, especially for those who are stuck on campus during lunch. It looks good now.”

Both students and teachers feel that the renovations to the lower quad were notable additions to the campus, improving students’ overall well-being.
