Currently, multiple construction projects are underway on the athletic fields, one of which is the demolition of the existing track for an improved one. Other projects include a new, state-of-the-art softball field, a new scoreboard in the gym, and a new stadium scoreboard.
The project began by tearing down the track surrounding the main field. Even though some sports teams still practice and host home games there, Calabasas High School has already started construction.
Sports coaches and physical education teachers planned to use the main field for the rest of the semester, but had to revise their lesson plans when construction workers informed the class that they could not be at the field on March 4.
Cross-country coach Christopher Martinez said the construction began earlier this month. He also said that staff members were notified about the construction before work officially began.
Although the entrance to the field is currently blocked due to construction, any sports teams planning to use the field will enter through a separate gate to avoid interfering with the construction area.
Martinez explained that the construction has made training more difficult for track and cross-country athletes who rely on specific practice surfaces.
“It’s made it a bit difficult to practice on the surfaces that we’d see in competition,” Martinez said. “Using our spike shoes is important to get used to, but in terms of training, we can practice on any field. It’s just inconvenient.”
He also said the project will take several months to complete due to the structure being added beneath the track.
“They are fixing the underlying concrete of that, and they need it to settle for a while,” Martinez said. “So they’re looking to have it finished by June.”
Short-distance track athlete Sophia Shahbazian, a junior at CHS, described how the construction has affected sprinters during the season.
“It’s impacted short distance because we need to be able to sprint on the track, and we are currently in season, and we have no track,” Shahbazian said. “We need to go to other schools to train, and if we can’t, we have to train on the field, which isn’t the same.”
She explained that while turf and field training can help build strength, it does not fully prepare sprinters for competition conditions.
“As sprinters, we need the rubber on the track to be able to train how a sprinter should,” she said.
Shahbazian also noted that although the upgrades may be helpful in the future, the timing has created challenges for the team.
“A track should be changed every so often because it gets worn out,” she said. “However, I don’t think it was a smart idea to do it right during our season.”
She added that the construction is partially due to issues with the previous track.
“There were already cracks, and the track wasn’t the proper size,” Shahbazian said. “They’re fixing it and possibly adding to it so it meets the correct standards.”
Physical education teacher Brian Collins said that staff members were informed about the upcoming construction ahead of time.
“Yes, we were given plenty of heads up about the projects that are going to be happening,” Collins said.
Collins explained that although the construction has changed some lesson plans, P.E. Classes still have access to several other areas around campus.
“We have different facilities that we use, like the new space that we just had installed,” Collins said. “We have the gym, the weight room, and tennis courts, so we still have access to a lot of things. It’s a minor inconvenience.”
While the exact timeline is still uncertain, Collins said the school hopes the project will be completed before major end-of-year events.
“I assume it’ll probably be done at least before graduation,” Collins said. “It’s important to have graduation on the stadium field.”
Collins also said the improvements will benefit both students and athletic programs once they are finished.

The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony is scheduled to take place on April 8, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM. At the event, the school will be revealing the main field following construction improvements.
