It is that time of year when ASB elections are rolling out at Calabasas High School. This allows students to choose their next representatives. These elections will determine who will run ASB next year.
ASB plays a vital role in our school, as they plan most of the school’s events, control fundraisers, and, overall, make the school more appealing to students.
According to Ella Kingsrud, the current ASB vice president, “ASB runs pretty much a lot of our school events in way more than people realize, and everything kind of happens behind the scenes.”
The roles that students at CHS can run for are ASB President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer, and Board Representative.
The ASB President and Vice President oversee the other officers.
“The president and Vice President are kind of the main executives,” said Kingsrud.
Running for ASB president are Blake Boostanfar and Michael Chen. Running for ASB Vice President are Isla Goldfarb and Morgan Sussen.
The ASB Board Representative goes to LVUSD meetings and ensures that the CHS students are heard and their ideas are presented. The 4 candidates running for ASB board rep. include Julie Gold, Sophie Katz, Noah Reichline, and Bailey Strull.
The ASB Secretary and Treasurer are in charge of all the money and funds that go into planning all the events for the students. The only candidate running for Treasurer and Secretary is Austin York.
According to Kingsrud, many important traits for ASB include leadership, teamwork, creativity, ambition, and execution.
“Leadership, having the ability to work as a group, teamwork, and creativity. Having good execution to plan things through, people who really care about wanting to make a difference in our school,” Kingsrud said.
In addition to the ASB board, students are also running for class positions. Each class contains a president, vice president, and secretary. These three positions work together in creating fundraisers, raising money for the class, and creating a fun environment for the students in their class.
According to Kingsrud, to keep the elections fair, there are many guidelines that need to be followed.
“We have very strict guidelines that we always review with our candidates, and we make it very clear that if those guidelines are broken, there will be consequences. We also have restrictions of eligibility to run for the elections, including good citizenship, good standing with teachers, and strong attendance records,” Kingsrud said.
Kingsrud’s piece of advice for any future candidates is “Don’t be afraid to get involved.” She said that ASB has been her favorite part of her high school experience, and everyone should get involved.
ASB elections take place on Friday, March 27, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
