According to Chinese legend the deafening roars of these fireworks awaken the Sleeping Dragon, which is believed to bring cherished rain in the summer for the growth of people’s crops. Additionally, in ancient China many would light bamboo stalks on fire to vanquish the evil spirits, represented by today’s dazzling display of fireworks. At such events people dress in red, decorate their homes with red and even exchange “lucky money” in red envelops, all embodying the powerful fire.
