screen-shot-2013-02-05-at-12-14-08-pmAt the start of each New Year, fireworks decorate the skies, symbolizing several ancient rituals.  According to Chinese legend the deafening roars of these fireworks awaken the Sleeping Dragon, which is believed to bring cherished rain in the summer for the growth of people’s crops.  Additionally, in ancient China many would light bamboo stalks on fire to vanquish the evil spirits, represented by today’s dazzling display of fireworks.  At such events people dress in red, decorate their homes with red and even exchange “lucky money” in red envelops, all embodying the powerful fire.  Light some sparklers, and begin the Chinese New Year with a bang!

Stuffing food in our bellies to no end is without a doubt the greatest part of every holiday.  The Tray of Togetherness is divided into eight parts, filled with different dishes that bring a prosperous New Year.  This feast is ideal for people who thoroughly enjoy symbolic treats.  Each sweet and salty snack has its own festive meaning that predicts one’s future: Candy Melon is for growth and health, fresh coconut is for friendship and unity, kumquat is for gold and prosperity, longan is for the reproduction of many sons.  Lotus seeds are for fertility, lychee nuts are for strong family ties, peanuts are for longevity and red watermelon seeds are for joy, happiness and truth.  You will most definitely have a sweet time celebrating!
