Even though Megan knew that chanting Bloody Mary’s name three times in front of a mirror was purely a myth, she still had always been frightened by the idea.

As Megan prepared for Halloween, she glanced out the window to appreciate the raging storm outside.  The windows rattled and the power suddenly shut off, causing Megan to accidently knock over her container filled with fake blood that she had hoped to use for her zombie costume.  She knew she was already late for trick-or-treating, so she made a mental note to clean up her mess later.  As she stood up to do a final check-over of her costume, she noticed her mirror had turned dark and hazy.  A dark figure with hair shadowing most of its face grew bigger, as if it were advancing closer.  Dark slits began to develop for eyes, and a sick smile hardened on the figure’s pale lips.  Right before Megan screamed, the lights suddenly came back on.  She found herself staring at her own horrified reflection, shakily laughing as she headed out the door to enjoy the night.

Megan remembered the mess of fake blood after she returned home hours later.  She then groggily trudged to the bathroom and failed to notice that her mirror was hazy once again.  However, this time there were no lights to stop Bloody Mary from stretching her pale hand toward Megan, chuckling as she pulled herself inside the human world.  Megan looked up to see the evil ghost bending down toward her with the same sick smile she had seen earlier.  In that moment Megan recalled the horrifying legend of Bloody Mary slitting her victim’s throats. The ghost rose as Megan’s body fell to the floor.  The Queen then merged her own spirit with the human one, just as Megan’s real, warm blood merged with the cold, fake blood on the floor.  No locked doors or weapons can keep this demon out.

Kelly and Maggie, two college roommates, have been best friends since kindergarten.  Now they are seniors preparing for their second-semester finals.  Kelly decides to stay up late and study, but Maggie decides to go to bed early so that she will be well rested for her exams.  Maggie turns off the lights and goes to bed as Kelly goes downstairs to another dorm to study.  Kelly opens her book and begins taking notes when suddenly -CRACK- her pencil breaks.  She then quietly returns to her room to retrieve another pencil.  As she sneakily slips into the pitch-black room, a musky odor wafts into her nose.  She merely thinks Maggie forgot to take out the trash.  Kelly knows where everything is in the room so she leaves the lights off to avoid bothering Maggie.  She grabs a pencil from her backpack and tiptoes outside but stops suddenly, for she feels that she has just heard a hushed laugh.  She feels in her gut that someone is watching her.

Kelly awakes after a long night of studying.  She lifts her drool-covered face from her book and walks back to her dorm, feeling like such a goof for being so paranoid the previous night.  When she arrives in her room, she is shocked to see Maggie still in bed and pulls the covers off of her to find Maggie’s decapitated corpse in front of her.  Screams gush from Kelly’s mouth.  Written over her own bed in Maggie’s blood were the words, “Aren’t you glad you didn’t turn on the light?”

From then on, Maggie’s ghost sat on Kelly’s bed each night and asked why she did not turn on the lights.  On Halloween night, Maggie sits on the beds of others and warns them to not turn on their lights.  Choose wisely as to whether you should keep your lights on or off tonight.
