Seemingly impossible scenarios like–walking down a red carpet, doing a backflip, or hanging out with a celebrity—are brought to life in a terrifyingly realistic way, now thanks to Sora AI. The platform is a new video-generation tool from OpenAI that has people both excited, but cautious.

Sora AI is a text-to-video system, letting people type or say what they want and then turning their description into a realistic video.

According to The Guardian, “We’re teaching AI to understand and simulate the physical world in motion.”

Sora AI is designed not just to make random animations, but to show real-looking people, places, and actions. A CNBC article explained that it is one of the most advanced AI tools so far.

“A user types out a desired scene, and Sora will return a high-definition video clip,” the website said.

For students, Sora AI lies within a gray area. On one hand, it can be used for creative purposes like short films, social media, or even school projects. On the other  hand, it can be used for creative purposes like short films, social media, or even school projects. However, it makes people wonder if they can still trust what they see online.

At Calabasas High School, two students shared their thoughts on what Sora AI means for the future. Freshman Daryan Shirazian was stunned when first learning about Sora AI.

“It blew me away. When I saw the first video, it was amazing because it was fake people but it looked so real. I have made videos of me jumping over a car, doing backflips, hanging with celebrities such as Jake Paul,” said Shirazian.

The program is able to replicate subjects realistically by using their face and voice to make realistic clips. Before creating any videos, users must show their full face and repeat numbers based off of a prompt so that the AI platform can use it as a base for the videos users want to create.

“It’s insane because it shows how fast the world is developing, and it shows how scary it’s going to get for future generations because this could take a dangerous turn,” said Shirazian.

Sophomore Sekandar Maiwandi also had strong opinions. He has not used Sora AI yet, but he has seen videos made with it.

“It’s too realistic… It looks super real now. You can’t even tell if it’s real or not. If they get rid of the watermark, it can lead to misuse, [like] creating things that can get people in trouble,” said Maiwandi.

He added that without a watermark, it would be almost impossible to tell if a video was real or fake.

“It’s possible that jobs will be taken away with AI, I’m just not sure which jobs,” Maiwandi said.

He believes that Sora AI could create conflict on social media because people might make videos of others that are misleading. He even mentioned seeing strange videos of celebrities like LeBron James that did not seem real.

Both students agreed that the technology could change the future. Shirazian thinks it could replace actors and editors, while Maiwandi believes it could lead to false information spreading on social media.

OpenAI says it is working on ways to make sure Sora AI is used responsibly. The company has shared that any videos of people will be carefully reviewed to prevent harm or misinformation. Even with these safety steps, Sora AI shows that it’s becoming harder to tell reality from fiction.

Whatever a person’s opinion may be about the implications of AI, especially Sora AI, the world is constantly changing, and it is up to society to make sure they do not get left behind.

“I think that the people who use AI to their advantage are going to make it much farther than people who don’t,” Maiwandi said.
