Review: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Review: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Nintendo/CNET

The Super Mario Bros movie brings to life one of the most popular video game series ever seen.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is based on one of the most iconic video game franchises ever created, first introduced by Nintendo in 1985. Over the years, Mario has become a global symbol of gaming, appearing in countless titles such as Super Mario Galaxy and Mario Kart. Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and produced by Illumination, the film brings this classic character into a modern animated format. With an amazing cast including Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, and Jack Black as Bowser, the movie aims to combine nostalgia with fast paced storytelling to appeal to both longtime fans and newer audiences.

Sophomore from CHS, Jake Hart, thought that the movie was very fun and interesting,  mainly thanks to its faithfulness to the games themselves.

“The movie was a really entertaining experience throughout,” said Hart. “The attention to detail and many Easter Eggs in the movie made it really feel as if you were inside the Mario universe.”

The energy in the movie was another huge factor the audience enjoyed.

Sophomore from CHS, Nash Seaman, thought it was a movie that was very vibrant and quick, but moved a little too fast, making it hard to sympathize with characters.

“It’s a movie that moves really fast and is colorful, seldom slowing down. The plot seemed rather rushed and basic.

However, senior Brandon Marzban felt more strongly about the movie.

“It was fun to watch, but definitely nothing special in the plot department.”

Nevertheless, he did mention that the movie was made for younger people.

“It feels like it is catered towards a younger demographic. In essence, the movie does everything that it is meant to, which is to entertain,” said Marzban

In addition, a freshman from CHS, Aiden Rezaie, found the plot of the movie to be rather simple to understand and thus easy to digest.

“The movie is not complicated, and you don’t really need to think about it much.”

A similar sentiment was shared by another freshman from CHS, Mia Perets.

“It’s a light-hearted, fun movie that will not bore you even if watching with others,” said Perets.

A freshman from CHS, Noam Loya, enjoyed the theme of nostalgia.

“Even if you are not the biggest Mario fan out there, you still will feel like you know most of the references used in the movie.”

A lot of references are easier to catch in the movie compared to how other movies would be.

Something that also stood out was the way the voice acting and character development enhanced even the most basic elements of storytelling in the film.

“The voices were really fitting with their characters, and they were more realistic,” said Hart, adding that this particular attribute had helped make Bowser feel like a legitimate character in the film.

This, in turn, helped make the film more enjoyable, as it made the characters feel even more like they belonged in the video games. As Seaman pointed out, the simplicity of the plot had not stopped the characters from being entertaining, saying,

“Even though the plot was very simple, I found the characters interesting,” said Seaman.

Overall, while the movie lacks a complex plot, it succeeds in delivering an entertaining, visually engaging experience that captures the spirit of the Mario franchise.
